I’m looking for a nice summary but I think it depends on how much we are importing.

Dairy

To support his plan to increase tariffs, President Donald Trump has repeatedly said that the Canadian government charges U.S. farmers a 250% or 270% tariff on dairy products exported to Canada. That’s misleading. There are rates that high on the books, but they would only be charged if U.S. exports exceed predetermined tariff rate quotas, which the dairy exports don’t come close to meeting.

According to the IDFA’s calculations, at the end of 2024, the average fill rate for dairy products subject to a calendar year tariff quota was only 26.72%. For dairy products subject to a quota year tariff, the average fill rate as of March 2025 was only 21.24%.

And could easily ask to renegotiate certain aspects. He isn’t asking for anything upfront. He is just making random mutually exclusive claims. This is just an insanity as policy.

There's a full list on Twitter from a White House account; it will amaze you to see that every single country in the world has a figure of at least 10%. No, really, it's just coincidence that 95 countries all charge exactly 10%.

And did you know that mighty Saint Pierre and Miquelon, with it's oh-so-independent trade policy, has a tariff/currency manipulation/trade barrier figure of 99%? Well, it's obvious when you look here:
https://wits.worldbank.org/tariff/trains/en/country/SPM/partner/USA/product/all
Look at all those zeros! That's just a ruse - they've taken the "99%", rounded it up to "100%", and the 1 has dropped off the left. Or something.

Granted it's not any more accurate, but baby steps seem appropriate for the emotional toddler.
