How's this for a headline meant to normalize and downplay the complete insanity of tariffs? Trump's Tariffs are Latest Sign of His Second-Term Appetite for Risk
I tweaked it for them, in case they're ever interested in rejoining the reality-based world: Trump's Tariffs are Based on Lies and Will Tank the US Economy for No Reason

(21,729 posts)or something? The NYT has a serious obligation to provide fact based news especially during times like these. They are failing in many (not all) cases.

(5,113 posts)An example, by normalizing this insane man they allow many to view what he's doing as normal.

It's the epitome of "this is all normal, nothing to see here."

(21,729 posts)I suppose one could write an article with no factual errors about the Covid pandemic that did not assign blame to anyone or call out any lies. Often what is omitted is the real culprit and by doing that, you do not give the reader a clear picture of the truth.

(5,113 posts)The accuracy or lack thereof is not the point I'm trying to make. What matters is the headline. Many people only look at the headlines and inform themselves from that perspective.

I remember having to get them approved by the editor when I wrote for my college paper. They are supposed to summarize the most important parts of the article. Because of that, it would be journalistic malpractice to write a headline like that to summarize an article that was critical of the policy.

If all that matters is the headline, why have articles at all? More fool me for reading them.

(4,262 posts)They read headlines only. Some may read a paragraph or two but most don’t read the whole article.

(6,465 posts)Trump does have a great appetite for risk- when he's risking other people's money and livelihoods.

(21,729 posts)And he's never faced any consequences for risking anything of his own. Of course the last thing he cares about is the well being of his fellow citizens. These tariffs are extremely dangerous and the NYT is obligated to inform its readers of that. It is not an opinion.
