Donald Trump's new price-hiking, job-killing tariffs are so absurd that even Republicans are joining Democrats in

denouncing them

Today at the White House, Donald Trump announced a massive set of new tariffs on allies and adversaries alike that have the potential to send America’s economy into recession while also hurting people and businesses here and abroad. The tariffs are so harmful and so dumb that even some Republicans are voicing opposition to them, which is remarkable, because Donald Trump and his rabid base don’t tolerate criticism.

“I guess it’s just possible that when we get details about the Trump tariffs they will be lower than what he just announced, but based on what he said, he’s gone full-on crazy,” said respected economist Paul Krugman. “It’s not just that he appears to be imposing much higher tariffs than almost anyone expected. He’s also making false claims about our trading partners — not sure in this case whether they’re lies, because he may be truly ignorant — that will both enrage them and make it very hard to back down.”

“I think this is a historically reckless moment in U.S. economic policy,” said commentator James Fallows. “And even by Trump-era standards it’s a historically shameful moment for the Republican Party. Its leaders know that their alpha-figure is launching a dollars-and-Euros version of the Iraq [invasion]. And they stand by, grinning and clapping.”

Fallows’ characterization is true of most Republicans… but not all.
