Wait till the coffee gets outrageous...

All those people that can't afford coffee, driving on the roads in the morning, half asleep, or having withdrawn for no caffeine. Road Rage spikes!!!

5-dollar coffee at Starbuck will now be 10-15 dollars a cup.... A pound of coffee in the store will now be 30 bucks...

Guess they will go back to Mountain Dew or 5-hour energy drinks... or God forbid, Tea!!

From Bing:
Caffeine pills are made from caffeine extracted from natural sources such as coffee beans, tea leaves, or cocoa beans1. The caffeine is then purified and combined with other ingredients to create the final pill formulation1.

So the only place in the USA that grows coffee is in Hawaii, and that's already expensive coffee. They won't be using that. I never heard of a tea plantation in the USA either.

So the caffeine is going to be coming from another country, and be subject to tariffs, or the pills themselves from another country and again, tariffs.

At least as it appears after minimal research.

Synthetic Caffeine:
Caffeine can be manufactured synthetically from chemical compounds like urea and chloroacetic acid. This process allows for the production of caffeine in large quantities and at a lower cost than extracting it from natural sources

All synthetic caffeine is nearly indistinguishable from naturally extracted.

Can prices have gone up. The cost of all canned goods are going up because of tariffs on metals.

I don't think that explains all the hike on your coke case though.

Here in Munich, the 1.5 liter bottles sell normally for 1.80. They are on sale rotationally between stores at 1.2-1.3. I buy then.

Pepsi and Coke are both at $3.

They haven't been selling as much, especially that high. As a result, they tend to get put up for sale a couple times a month at 3 for $6 when the store decides they need to push the inventory out before it hits the sell date.

As often as they go up for sale at $2 per, I'm surprised that the price hasn't dropped to $2.50.

Hilariously, the price of the name brand stuff has gotten so bad that Dollar General has decided it's worth the money to start selling their store brand sodas again. $1.50 per, meanwhile Wal-mart still sells their own brand at $1 per. Harps has generic Best Choice at... $1.68 iirc. Always Save is another generic they stock, but I can't remember the price of that one.

Because of her RLS, she can only drink coffee made from a real espresso machine. She likes it strong enough to jumpstart a corpse. I love the aroma, and if it is polluted with enough sugar, I’ll drink it, too.

But black tea, laced with cinnamon, orange peel and cloves, a few drops of freshly squeezed lemon, and then sweetened with marillen (Austrian apricots) marmalade, now that will set me with a smile for the rest of the day/night.

The average tariff on coffee producing countries is around 40%. If all of that gets passed on Starbucks will be paying something like 40% more for coffee beans. But beans are only a fraction of the cost serving a cup of coffee. Wages, electricity, the premises account for the lions share of the cost. At most a 5-dollar coffee at Starbucks will be 6 dollars a cup.

Fri Apr 4, 2025, 05:10 AM
Apr 2025

(And for those specifically concerned only with non-coffee caffeine in other products, labs have been making synthetic caffeine for years, especially for those who worry about their Mountain Dew or energy drinks--can be made in bulk and much cheaper.)

As for lab-created coffee:
Two years after the scientists in Finland successfully made coffee in a laboratory, VTT Technical Research Center of Finland Ltd has released detailed information on the process. Published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry, the scientific paper describes the exact process the scientists used to produce coffee starting from the original coffee plant itself, and establishing cell cultures to alter its aroma in the roasting process, caffeine content, flavor analysis, and sensory profiling by a panel of tasters.
https://phys.org/news/2023-12-scientists-recipe-lab-grown-coffee-creation.html

As ridiculous and enraging as his tariffs are, our major problem with coffee is the recent drought in all the leading coffee-producing areas.

Even the Starbucks blonde isn’t a real light roast it’s a medium roast.

I like light roast except for certain brands like bustelo and 8’o clock they taste good at a darker roast. I love light roast ceremony brand coffee.

I also do the salt on top of the grinds. I learned it from a 4 star chef that was on the psych unit with me. She told me to try it after the coffee on the psych unit made me wince and shiver it was so bitter. So adding salt was a revelation.

Apparently as much caffeine as strong tea leaves!

I have several on my land up here in Minnesota over 10 yr old. Small tree to 15', hardy to -30F. Also beautiful in bloom. The nuts are kind of like peanuts when saltwater soaked and roasted. I've started selling seedlings grown from nuts from my trees for a little extra cash. Mine originally came from Burnt Ridge Nursery out of Washington State.

I haven't tried using them for tea yet, but will this year.

We have really slowed down on going out for meals because the cost is outrageous.

The large canisters of big brands got expensive over past year with fewer or no good sales. Because of GERD, I have to drink decaf but I found I can do better buying 12 oz bags of brands on sale such as Tim Horton, Community Coffee and Seattle's Best because they have decaf with 100% Arabica and taste better too.
