Most Americans don't even know anything is happening. I've talked to a couple of people in the last couple of days, neighbors, they had no idea what I was talking about. They don't watch the news. In fact if it isn't a reality TV show or murder documentary, they have no idea.
Even of those that do know don't understand what it all means so they mostly tune it out.
People like us are "hair on fire" right now but a large portion of the country has barely even noticed or don't understand why it matters or figure someone will come along and just fix it. That is the real challenge: reaching people and making them understand why it should matter to them.

(11,517 posts)Everything currently on the shelves was imported before the tariffs hit.
It's the stuff coming in later this month that will be hit, prices to rise then.

(10,534 posts)That once prices do start to rise they will try to shift the blame to Biden. It's the Republican SOP.

Once someone starts they will all follow.

(4,154 posts)Of this, I have no doubt.
I wonder how many shorted and bought back, making $ on the way down (and then when it has a bounce)
I'm curious to see what the futures will be tonight.

(1,128 posts)I feel alone in my neighborhood. This is a below middle class neighborhood and the people who live around here have everything to lose. My poor sweet neighbor, who went to college at 58 yrs old, while holding down a full time job, to become a LMHP (LICENSED MENTAL HEALTH PRACTITIONER, recently graduated) told me to get some counseling and stop watching the news. She said she has faith that everything will work out. 😲. Another neighbor, 40 something, grew up down the street, didn't vote because they don't think it matters who you vote for and they are all liars who can't be believed. I think, this time it mattered. I haven't asked them if they have had a change of heart because I would lose my cool if they said, no.
Those type of people are no limited to your neighborhood either. We have to accept that most people are ignorant sheep and they are ignorant sheep on purpose. I don't know how to reach them and I'm not convinced there is a way to reach them.

(29,509 posts)I mentioned it to one of my coworkers yesterday, saying how we won't be able to afford our databases and online training materials any more, and she just looked at me blankly and was like, "I didn't hear that, but I don't follow politics." WTAF?!?!
It's not politics. It's the job. I've never understood people that use that excuse. As a librarian, you are the protectors of the written word. What is fact and what is fiction (completely separate parts of the library). When they come for the libraries and the librarians, you know fascism is on the rise.
I have the greatest respect for professional librarians. You all are real life superheroes.

(29,509 posts)As much as I wish I could be at a Hand-Off protest today, I'm pretty happy to work my little subversive government job today - helping people finding housing, food, clothing, immigration support, education, and jobs. My job is the anti-Trump Agenda. Delighted to be paid to help so many people.

(36,602 posts)My brother is one of those. I've been an activist all my life. My brother entered the political sphere relatively recently. Post election, he avoids the news not because he is unaware, but because he is too aware, and being faced daily, or more frequently, too hard on his mental health. As much as I hate him backing away, I also know that staying involved when it threatens your mental health is not helpful.
