Futures are still showing down and the S&P closed down 6 points. It's possible we could see the first circuit breaker threshold of 7% Monday, if it opens the same way it closed today .
That would trigger a 15 minute pause on the market.
The last time the market was paused due to sell offs was December 1st, 2008.

So,it would have to drop by 7 % relative to today's close.

(10,556 posts)But my assumption would be that each day is building of the fear and uncertainty of the day before, which is why the circuit breakers exist to slow the feeding frenzy and let people take a breath.

(1,284 posts)it's just symbolic. I don't see what pausing the free fall for 15 minutes can actually do to stem the blood letting.

(10,556 posts)By creating that break the hope is to break the sell cycle just long enough that the buys take over and start pushing things back through other way because the stock is cheaper now.
