Epically Stupid
April 7, 2025 at 7:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

John Ellis: “You can’t grow coffee in any of the United States of America except Hawaii. And you can’t begin to grow enough coffee in Hawaii to meet even a small part of America’s daily demand. So you have import it from all around the world (Africa, South America, Central America, Asia).”

“Right now, a cup of coffee or a can of coffee at the supermarket or a 5-pound bag… costs X. This week it will cost X plus 10%. At least. If the coffee comes from certain countries, it will cost X plus a lot more.”

“Politically speaking, what the White House has managed to create here is a daily reminder to every single coffee drinker in the United States of America that their cost of living has increased. Every day they will get this little memo…

“In the annals of political stupidity go, there are ‘own goals’ and there are ‘own goals’. This one is epic.”

an analyst said that lots of Americans still thought that everything he said when campaigning is just "Trump talk and he won't really do that".

We have to face the fact that there really are a helluva lot of fellow Americans who are gullible/ignorant.

I was talking to a young man a few days ago who lives on the same floor of the same condo as a friend of mine. He is mentally challenged but he functions very well. He lives alone, works three days a week at Costco, and gets himself to work on the bus. We pass in the hall often, say hello or chat briefly, and it is only his habit of repeatedly using my and my friend's names that indicated his need to work harder than many of us to remember them. The other day we had a longer than usual chat and he mentioned his difficulty in remembering names and expressing himself, but in actuality he did very well. Perhaps because he puts in the extra effort.

What he wanted to talk about was our upcoming federal election in Canada and his feelings about Poilievre. To sum up his thoughts, he felt Poilievre only spoke in generalities without talking about specific plans or policies, and he was very concerned. He also said how much he hated listening to the news coming out of the States because it was so horrible.

There's another friend I speak with who has an IQ in the 140+ range. He has dyslexia. He went to school before this was recognized and developed his own method to teach himself to read which was later adopted by area schools, although I'm sure there are different programs now. We've also spoken about the upcoming election. His main concern was about the possibility of the Liberals enacting greater restrictions on guns because he hunts (and grows vegetables) to lower his food costs. For that reason, this election he plans to vote Conservative. And this despite the fact that he and members of his immediate family have serious health concerns. They have, between them, required repeated ER visits, a couple of hospital stays, and multiple tests to identify the problems. And yet, to quote The Walrus:

All the evidence suggests that, under a Poilievre government, the private health care market—which, according to some estimates, accounted for about 29 percent of all health dollars spent in this country in 2023—will flourish, at least by Canadian standards. More people will find themselves paying out of pocket for access to medical services like diagnostic imaging, orthopedic surgery, primary care, and virtual care. https://thewalrus.ca/poilievre-health-care/

There seems to be so much more at play here than intelligence, and I certainly wouldn't call my friend (the one who hunts) gullible or uninformed. Nor can I understand why concern for his ability to keep his food costs down would overrule his concern for the high medical costs he could easily accrue.

Trying to make sense of this makes me want to

https://www.mediamatters.org/fox-news/flashback-how-foxs-biased-reporting-clouded-2000-election

As the 2000 presidential race began to heat up, Fox found its niche. The network's average daily audience was still barely half of CNN's, but there were times -- during the Republican National Convention, for example -- when Fox News actually surpassed CNN in the ratings.1

To aid that year's election-night coverage, Fox hired journalist and media consultant John Ellis to help analyze the results. It was Ellis who determined that Fox News should call the state of Florida -- and the election -- for George W. Bush, leaving the rest of the networks playing catch-up. They would retract this prediction hours later, but the projection, while not carrying any official weight, set in motion the dynamic that Bush had already won and created the perception that Gore's attempts to get a recount made him a sore loser. Ellis was not an impartial observer; he was a Bush cousin who had been communicating with the campaign's headquarters all night.

People in general don't understand supply chains and think of them in terms of shipping stuff over weeks and months. But items like coffee are coming in through our ports daily, the ports are where the tariffs are levied. Coffee goes from port to shelf in a very short time, a matter of days in some instances, at most weeks. There aren't giant warehouses filled with coffee anywhere.

The entire supply chain for nearly everything is set up for just in time delivery. It's one of the founding principles of lean, to not have costly inventory and to pull the raw materials into your production system only when you're ready to use them.

Here in Michigan, the entire auto industry is having a bomb detonated over it. The tier 2 and tier 3 suppliers cannot absorb more costs this quickly without serious consequences. I expect mass layoffs throughout the month and beginning as soon as this week.

Trump‘s tariffs make no sense as economic policy as Senator Chris Murphy explains so well in this little video. How does it make sense? That’s much darker.

They do make sense as the tool Trump is using to collapse democracy, and bully companies to come to him and beg for relief. Like he’s been bullying law firms and universities.
