Think about it. TSF is NOT a member in many prestigious golf clubs, e.g., Tuxedo, Shinnecock, National, Maidstone, etc. -- because nobody wants to associate with him.Given the club’s historic connection with the office of POTUS, and Trump’s infatuation with the sport, you might have thought that The Donald and Augusta might be acquainted in some way, if not formally as a member then as a guest with an open invitation to play whenever he has a slot in the diary.

By preference, background, habit and milieu, if not temperament, Trump is every bit as elite as those he disdains in the execution of power. Augusta membership would represent for him the ultimate validation, conferring upon him status a level above that of the Oval Office. But he is not elite enough for Augusta. Nope, and that has got to hurt.

Augusta National is old money, it represents a stately vision of America, a place that exists, like Plato’s realms, only as an abstraction.
Outwardly, it wears its wealth and power responsibly, it values honesty, integrity, manners. Yes, there are all sorts of contradictions associated with great wealth, secrecy and altruism, but the benevolence is real for those who benefit from the club’s many charitable, educational and community investments.
And, importantly, in this era of era of wild instability, Augusta National stands as a bulwark against Trump’s economic and cultural vandalism. The club is not only saying no to him, it has cancelled him. In this arcadian corner of America, at least, Trump does not exist.

Plus he drives his cart on the greens. Can you imagine...

(39,859 posts)Will love this story. Even though he detests trump for all the reasons we do, what he complains most about on the phone is Trump’s golf behavior.

(3,260 posts)Why do you think so many deals and business transactions start with a casual game of golf. You can observe many mannerisms of your fellow golfers by paying close attention and listening. This is why one is always cautious before a partnership in a business deal with an unfamiliar entity. Usually, a caddy is offered a little extra if they also keep score of your new acquaintance and potential partner to see if he cheats. The unwritten rule of golf is never do business with anyone that cheats at golf. And TSF cheats at golf at the same rate he tells lies.

(19,585 posts)golf is inherently a gentleman's game. Character, honesty, and social integrity are the coin of the realm. Trump has none of those.
Augusta National was, until 1990, a completely segregated entity, until they accepted a man named Ron Townsend as their first Black member. They didn't accept their first female member until 2012, when Condoleezza Rice and another woman were granted membership.
As of today, they've never extended an offer of membership to a 34 time convicted felon, convicted rapist, twice impeached, Russian asset. But you never know.

I can think of a couple reasons he's not a member.
Reason 1: you don't join Augusta National, they join you. Membership is through recommendation and member vote. Since very few people like Donald Trump he'd never get the support.
Reason 2: he is in the golf business himself. If he were to join the club, he'd only remain in it long enough to have his guests memorize the menu and the layout of the facilities so he could open a copy of it.

(8,264 posts)No, I don't play golf. I've been to the practice rounds of the Masters. It's an absolutely beautiful course.
Augusta National is all about decorum, class, & manners. The Fascist Felon has none of those. Even to go to the practice rounds, which are more laid back than the regular Masters (or so I'm told) they send visitors a list of do's and don'ts. Who thinks that fat slob would follow the rules?
