Hedge-fund billionaire Ray Dalio, who predicted the 2008 financial crisis, is warning that President Donald Trumps extensive tariffs combined with other factors could drive the economy to the brink.
I think that right now we are at a decision-making point and very close to a recession, he said on Meet The Press on Sunday. And Im worried about something worse than a recession if this isnt handled well.
He said the problems today are potentially much more profound than whats seen in a typical recession, which is two negative quarters of GDP growth.
We have a breaking down of the monetary order, he said, along with profound changes in both domestic and world order.
Such times are very much like the 1930s, he said, referring to the period that covered most of the Great Depression. Ive studied history and this repeats over and over again.

The 1930s and 1940s were dark times.

(152 posts)Our debt. Its serviced by investors who buy our bonds. Investors and countries buy our bonds bc they are deemed the most secure investments in the world. Last week the rate on the 10 year bond went up by 0.20 percent in a matter of hours. Now, that small increment doesnt seem meaningful, but when youre investing hundreds of millions of dollars that increase means a lot. If it continues the cost of servicing our dept will exceed $1T a year.

(7,115 posts)In the wargame, 'Hearts of Iron 4', when you play as the Soviets during WW2, you can boost your nation's development speed by handing Stalin "fake economic reports". This is just a game mind you. tRUMP is pushing this BS on the American people like we're the "suckers and losers". I've been hunkering down since the bloated one re-entered the WH and plan on doing the same until he's dead and gone. Praying it's soon

(65,133 posts)the media just hasn't caught up. as per usual.
they would rather parse words and skirt around the issue then come right out an say it. because no one (all cowards) wants to come right out and say it.
so if we the middle class (what's left of it) is a recession, the poor are in a depression.
and the way things are going, it won't be long until we are all in a depression.

(1,088 posts)Trump saying I know what Im doing"
sounds similar to GW Bush's
"I know how the world works"
Both were so incompetent; one lead us into the recession; other will probably do so after Biden handed him a good economy.
As before, it will take a Democratic President and Congress to get us out of this mess.

(4,825 posts)appeared to me at least, as a billionaire who is not so greedy that he will throw out all common sense, reason and his patriotism. I watched this interview. Every time he was pressed, he stopped short of saying "economic depression," but seemed to be biting his tongue, wanting to say it.
We're in trouble here. I hope and pray that I and Mr. Dalio are wrong.

(19,043 posts)The difference from the 1930s is that if anyone blames Trump they will be dragged to a prison in another country. After a while we wont hear about the prison. They will just disappear like in other banana republics.
Unless someone comes up with a way to fight this, this is our future.
