Trump Administration Considers Pulling CBS Broadcasting License

The Trump administration is once again escalating its attack on the free press, this time by threatening to revoke the broadcast license of CBS—an unprecedented move in modern American politics that marks a direct assault on the First Amendment.

Trump-appointed FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr has announced he is considering pulling CBS’s license, citing penalties outlined in the Communications Act. This isn’t a theoretical statement or idle musing; it is a concrete signal that Trump allies in government are willing to weaponize federal regulatory powers to silence news organizations that criticize the president.

This move is not just anti-press—it is anti-democratic. The threat to CBS is not about regulatory compliance, community standards, or technical violations. It is a retaliation against reporting that Donald Trump doesn’t like. It’s an authoritarian tactic straight out of the strongman playbook: punish dissent, intimidate journalists, and consolidate control over the public narrative.

Donald Trump has a long, well-documented history of hostility toward the media. He has repeatedly labeled news outlets “the enemy of the people,” called for the revocation of licenses, and encouraged supporters to distrust and vilify journalists. Now, with this latest maneuver, his administration is moving beyond rhetoric and into action.

Which was IIRC a plan to takeover CBS by buying up their stock and installing their own Board so they could "become Dan Rather's boss" and fire him.

Conservative playbook doesn't change much, except by degree.

And by the way, Trump was already suing CBS over the Harris interview, and now his head of FCC is sabre rattling against it. Does that fit the scenario for a shakedown? Or worse?

__________
I also recall this began the downslide of CBS which was eventually rescued by a 'white knight', a wealthy investor L. Tisch who saved the company from the takeover. I stopped following it but later it was sold to .. Viacom, then those two split, but it was basically owned by Sumner Redstone's companies at one point.

And like you said, it's not the 1950's anymore. CBS could in theory continue on in streaming or cable for a while at least. They likely would gather lots of new viewers and major press from around the world. I don't think Trump would risk it but we'll see.

Only the individual CBS local stations have FCC licenses for their over-the-air signals. I believe the FCC would have to hold hearings on every CBS affiliated station in the US: That's 251 of them. They would have to show some kind of reason to jerk their licenses. TV stations lawyers could keep this in the courts for years and years.

Trump and his lackeys think they're some kind of royalty from the 16th century.

CBS NETWORK DOES NOT HAVE BROADCAST LICENSE. Neither does ABC or NBC. You can't pull a non-existent license. And the worst thing, is all the networks know this, yet they continue to report these stories as if it is something that can actually happen. Totally pathetic.

so YEAH, they could pressure the FCC to pull those licenses of stations which are owned by CBS,

CBS is a television NETWORK---

Television NETWORKS, (nor cable channels), DO NOT HAVE a "broadcasting license"---
nor are they required to have one!

Only broadcasting "stations" have broadcasting licenses, and are required to have them....

Now, CBS may own some stations, and they could threaten those individual station licenses---

and I don't know how the CBS television network forwards their programs to all of their affiliates---
they COULD be doing that through some kind of signal which requires a license,
but seems like the INTERNET would be an alternative which would require NO license... "streaming", basically.

As such, this is a totally meaningless threat---
other than the fact that it is predictable nazi-wannabe FASCIST bullying---

and shows that, as usual, Trump and his clown car
have no idea WHAT THE FUCK they are talking about!

My personal expertise is this issue, such as it is, stems from the fact that I used to be a "radio pirate" who would have liked to broadcast legally, but it was far too expensive.... but I do know the difference between a broadcasting station, which needs a license, and a 'network' for which there is no such license in existence, and never has been such a thing.

I was in broadcast news for many many years. I'm retired but back when I was there the network signal came in on phone lines. The phone lines were special higher quality than normal. Then when satellite communications became a thing, a lot of back-and-forth feeds were done via satellite dishes. The problem with satellite feeds, as anybody with a home DirectTV or SiriusXM knows, is that when rain storms appear the signal can get spotty. So land lines are still necessary.

As far as I know, the FCC has no authority to stop CBS or anybody else from using phone lines or up and down satellite links.

According to On The Media, 3/4 of Rupert's don't share his views and might steer Fox News back to a semi-respectable platform, unless the other (hard right) son is successfully in litigating to wrest control of the trust & empire from his siblings.

Mon May 5, 2025, 10:52 PM

It is illegal for a politician to threaten a private business which has not committed any crime. During his first term he threatened the tax exempt status of national football teams for allowing players to "take a knee" in protest. He didn't do it I expect because he was told it was illegal, but Trump doesn't believe that anything he does now is illegal.
