From the Naomi Klein interview at Rolling Stone.
He has found religion recently. I dont know if youve been following this, but Peter Thiel is now running Bible study groups in Silicon Valley. He said in a few interviews recently that he believes that the Antichrist is Greta Thunberg. Its extraordinary. He said that its foretold that the Antichrist will be seeming to spread peace. But heres his thinking. He says Greta wants everyone to ride a bicycle. (Now, thats a gross caricature of what shes said.) But hes said Greta wants everyone to ride a bicycle. That may seem good, but the only way that could happen is if there was a world government that was regulating it. And that is more evil than the effects of climate change.
There must be some serious mad cow disease affecting the one percenters. Maybe it's mad caviar disease.

(15,697 posts)"There are two novels that have a lifelong impression on smart 14 year old bookish boys - Atlas Shrugged and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. One is an unrealistic fantasy and the other has Orcs..."
Unfortunately, with his Afrikaans background, the Rand fantasy made more of an impression the Tolkien fantasy, even though Tolkien was from South Africa himself.
Tolkien would hated Apartheid. His heroes always prevailed through diversity and inclusion of different talents and experiences.
Segregation was a weakness in his world.
FWIW, when he described his orcs, tended to have mottled greyish skin, and both the Hobbits and "Strider" - later the Returned King Elessar - were described as being brown skinned or swart (extremely tanned).
Thiel admires Saruman. Has been said by those who know him that he's commented Saruman should have been the hero, he could have defeated Sauron and his orcs sooner - but of course, it could just be him being the urbane troll he is.

(2,488 posts)...to use LOTR names for his products? The Tolkien estate has historically been very aggressive pursuing copyright claims.
haele
(15,697 posts)Palantir and Arundel are two. I don't know what else he's used, but he's probably going to have enough lawyers claiming those names are out of copyright or he might just be throwing a bunch of money at them and thinking they're not going to look too closely at what his products are doing.
They aren't technically evil on the surface, and he probably could spin some beneficial tale about aiding humanity or something.
Remember, the estate is at the grandchildren's level, and whether or not the grandkids want to preserve the lore and legacy, their personal political outlook may not be the same.
Which can easily be said about many millennial kids who might be following in "Grandpa's footsteps".

and it's a fairly safe bet that Thiel has access to the best chatbot his money can buy, probably one customized for him. Which could help explain both this delusion about Greta Thunberg and the bizarre op-ed he wrote for the Financial Times in January:
https://www.democraticunderground.com/100219893424
https://www.democraticunderground.com/100219919577
Discussions with his friendly local chatbot are likely to take him farther and farther out on both rhetorical and intellectual limbs, until whatever they're discussing bears little resemblance to reality but makes perfect sense to him - and his chatbot is likely to agree and applaud.

-"People are spending way too much time thinking about climate change, way too little about AI."
- "A diploma is a dunce hat in disguise."
" I suspect Obama did not know he was recording Angela Merkel's cell phones."
IMHO, Greta's not the AntiChrist, but Peter Thiel might be.

(8,012 posts)People like Thiel know what they want. They are too lazy to look in the mirror and ask why they want what what they want. And if they do ask that question, the answer is unsatisfying because it is contrary to what they know is for the greater good. Far easier to seek approval from an ancient text, stake a claim that they are right with God and all who oppose are wrong or worse. They see themselves as rational beings rather than greedy and self interested.

(60,733 posts)My wife comes from the flat farm country of the northwest, and grew up on a bicycle. She still uses it here in town, and it's no accident that she still has the figure of a 20 year old model at age 73. It was the main for of transportation for her parents, as well. They never even owned a car. Her mom used to ride her bike the 6 Kilometers to her dentist beyond the age of 90, and probably still would (she is now 98) if her eyes still worked.
