People like Thiel know what they want. They are too lazy to look in the mirror and ask why they want what what they want. And if they do ask that question, the answer is unsatisfying because it is contrary to what they know is for the greater good. They see themselves as rational beings rather than greedy and self interested.

My wife comes from the flat farm country of the northwest, and grew up on a bicycle. She still uses it here in town, and it's no accident that she still has the figure of a 20 year old model at age 73. It was the main for of transportation for her parents, as well. They never even owned a car. Her mom used to ride her bike the 6 Kilometers to her dentist beyond the age of 90, and probably still would (she is now 98) if her eyes still worked.
