Robert Francis Prevost OSA (born September 14, 1955) is an American Catholic prelate who has served as prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America since 2023. He previously served as Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru from 2015 to 2023, and was prior general of the Order of Saint Augustine from 2001 to 2013. In 2015 Cardinal Prevost became a naturalized citizen of Peru as confirmed by Peru's National Civil Registry.

Born in Chicago, Prevost spent the early part of his career there working for the Augustinians. He served in Peru from 1985 to 1986 and from 1988 to 1998 as a parish pastor, diocesan official, seminary teacher and administrator. He was made a cardinal in 2023.

In 2023, Pope Francis appointed Prevost as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, a prominent role that has elevated his profile as a potential papal candidate. Since Francis's death, Prevost has been called papabile, a leading candidate for election as pope during the 2025 papal conclave...

In 2000, Prevost allowed Father James Ray, an Augustinian priest, to reside at St. John Stone Friary in Chicago. Ray had been suspended from public ministry since 1991 due to credible accusations of sexual abuse of minors. Although the priory was close to a Catholic elementary school, Prevost did not notify the school administration about Ray. The Augustinians noted that Ray was assigned a monitor while at St. John Stone. Ray was moved to a different residence in 2002 when the US Conference of Catholic Bishops adopted stricter rules for handling priests accused of abusing minors.[12][13][a]

One sin does not cast judgment on the 2,000 year old Church that Jesus has built (Matthew 16:18) across six continents, or on its 1.2 billion faithful. Only God/Jah is perfect, not humans. Jesus came for sinners, not the righteous. Even Pope Francis went to confession at least once a week.
Good news about the Catholic Church: the American Council of Catholic Bishops and Catholic Charities have each filed suits against this government's abuse of the poor -- so at least there's that.

word is that he's a humble and kind man in the mode of Francis.

Supposedly the "least American" of the American Cardinals and Bishops, so that sounds positive too.

That this is a surprise is also encouraging. Leo being chosen is apparently a nod to social teachings that respect the poor and meek.

Chicago's one of the most Catholic city in America - if not the most - mainly due to large immigrant communities in the late 19th and early 20th Century starting with Irish, Italian, Polish, and German Catholics. It has maintained that character through Latino migration and immigration in recent decades. For example, my childhood parish in south suburban Cook County was mainly south side Irish Catholic when I grew up, but the last time I was there for regular Mass about ten years ago, the parishioners were largely Latino.

To say they are pumped is an understatement.

Give the boys in the basement a few more hours, and we'll find out he was a founding member of a dog-fighting ring, or the mastermind behind the Antwerp Diamond Heist.

I dunno a thing about the guy. A think there are about seventeen of us worldwide who don't know a thing about the guy.
