Action Alert: Please weigh in on actions of STOP UW
I think it is critical that any group purporting to stand for human rights does everything in their power to promote peaceful, EFFECTIVE, action.
STOP UW (Students United for Palestinian Equality and Return UW, or SUPER UW) appears to have spectacularly failed in this.
SUPER UW has an active Facebook page. I posted the following in response to their May 6 "Update" post. If you consider violence or destruction of property to be counterproductive, consider posting your views. There are surprisingly few comments and I think what you post will be read -- and could perhaps make a difference.
My comment:
Take a lesson from the Hands Off protests April 5. An estimated 3 to 5 million gathered in protests in every corner of the nation, without a single reported incident of violence or disruption.
That is how you inspire others to take a stand for human rights and bedrock values. That is how you grow numbers -- by example.
The damage you have done is so much greater than the property damage. You have handed the reactionary right the images they long for -- images they use to fuel their propaganda. The destruction undermines the growing momentum against the 47 regime. The destruction undermines the growing opposition to Netanyahu's government.
If you actually want to advance your cause, make sure every person involved in any future action reviews and commits to heed the guidance provided here: De-escalation resources.
Should you fail to do this as leaders -- if you promote
violence and destruction of property -- then the only conclusion is that your organization is a false flag operation committed to advancing the cause of the forces you claim to oppose. .
