The best president we never had was Adlai Stevenson,

Al Gore, or Kamala Harris?

No. To my mind it will always be Hillary Rodham Clinton, governing with the first liberal Supreme Court since the '70s.

It was Henry Wallace. If he wasn't replaced with Truman on the ticket, he would had become president when FDR died.

All the smart people voted for him. Unfortunately, he needed a majority.

Saw him at Logan Airport, waving to the crowd, wearing the Homburg. Must have been 1956.
I was atop my father's shoulders out on the tarmac in the thick of it. Then we had to hustle as the Mass.State Police started to form a flying wedge to clear the crowd.

Consider this: Senator Joseph McCarthy and his lackey, Roy Cohn, likely would not have had the traction, the publicity, the fear, the threat if Adlai Stevenson had been elected in 1952. Stevenson would have addressed their reckless accusations of Communism and the country wouldn't have been held hostage for more than half a decade. Being brilliant was Stevenson's weapon of choice. ("Egghead", my ass!)

My mother loved Adlai and Eleanor.

She was really angry that he lost to IKe.

We are paying the price to this day. Ike
set Nixon up.

Nixon used the race card, and that set Reagan
up.

We've been race carded to where we are today.

Could have been the GOP nominee in '56 prior to Lincoln (was the favorite in 1860, but lost at the convention - in '68 he was too old and Grant too popular). Great Senator. Seward was a helluva Secretary of State and one of Lincoln's closest advisors though, so he was still plenty influential. Also helped purchase Alaska!
