The State HAD a surplus. They gave $700 to those with cars during the pandemic.

I just got on Medi-Cal last year and realized some benefits from it and being I am a low-income totally disabled senior citizen I was glad I didn't have to liquidate (or hide) what assets I have.

Now Newsom wants to cut me off and I need the help.

I am alone and just had to give up my car as I am losing my eyesight now. So yeah, this really sucks!

Can't win for shit unless I lie and hide hide hide.

The total is over the $2,000.00 limit so I have too much in the bank to pay the bills and remain in my home.

So, I'm supposed to HIDE the money somewhere and what do I do when I go to pay the property taxes and insurance?

As for Newsom, he comes from a very wealthy family from San Francisco and he has no idea what it is like to do without for one minute.

Trump can't but help act on his grievances over real and imagined sleights. A majority of Californians voted against him twice and he will try to take revenge in multiple ways, giving Gov. Newsom ample opportunities to oppose Trump, which he is doing quite effectively. His very clear to the point opposition will aggravate Trump and increase Newsom's national recognition and prestige.

Surprisingly, there’s an intermittent effort here to eliminate every Dem governor from the pool of possible candidates, one by one. Just a few people, but persistent, and they keep bringing up Newsom — like, in a thread about how “Gov. Bob” isn’t ideal, Newsom’s name “spontaneously” pops up (again) as being a terrible, terrible prospect because of something a guest said on his podcast? .

Let me just say this: as a Californian, I think he’s doing a good job. He’s been through COVID with us, and major regional fires, and so on, all the while navigating enormous cultural, technological, economic, and cultural shifts, not to mention having to deal with a madman as POTUS. Right now California is being used as a test lab for a military coup by the madman. Bear all that in mind when someone brings up the podcast or his long-ago ex-wife.

Let me also say this: as a Democrat, I look forward to a robust primary. I want to hear from a solid slate of potentials, and most of all I want to win.

I remember when Michael Avenatti was going to be the next president . . . until he turned out to be a scoundrel.

He is exactly who we need now in this role, and for that I am grateful. But just because he is doing what needs to be done now, and doing it well, does not mean he is the person we need as our next president. He has some issues that would not make him my first choice.

Harris was never pro-Palestinian. The choice between Harris and Trump was in the presidential race, not in the primary. I voted for Harris, although I wish she would have separated herself more from Biden on that and on the pocketbook economy. And there's nothing self-righteous about anything I said.

My point is that Democrats are fond of shiny objects, whenever they appear, in whatever capacity. That's not a smart way to determine which candidate to vote for in the primaries. Newsom as my first choice. Assuming there are better options, I'll vote for someone else in the primary.

Let's not infight and waste energy pre-losing the hypothetical election this far in advance.

given the reality in which we live. On any given day, the governor should piss off half the people and the other half the next. His job is to be the Governor for all his constituents. That means he's going to be fielding flack every day.
I think a lot of people need to think a little harder before flinging shit over his podcasts. We're all day harping past each other and mocking and belittling, bitching and bickering. And get up tomorrow and do it again. In all my trips around the Sun, we've never stopped to really listen, and NOTHING has changed (for the better). Nobody feels that they are being heard, and their concerns are not considered, nor are their feelings. And while we may assert that we don't have feelings (you know who you are, Bud), they can certainly be hurt, and you can certainly react.
I may be wrong, but I thought I was seeing a man making contact with others with seemingly disparate views to LISTEN and try to make them feel heard. In this way dialogue and negotiation might find a way to lower the heat of these exchanges, and move us closer to a way to respect one-another a little more. Does anybody think we can go on this way for much longer? We are literally surrounded by peoples who, more each day it must be said, wish us to fall. As well as hundreds of domestic terror groups, cabals and militias plotting to bring it all down from inside. Until a majority can find their Humanity we are doomed to swirl on down, and our Greatness, our Exceptionality will be just a smudge around the drain. So I applaud my Governor for reaching out. He didn't join up. He put himself on the line to listen and learn.
On another aspect, if he learned something that would help us convince three-or-four percent to swing our way, it would change a lot.

He and Gwen have been dear, personal friends of mine for over 20 years. Both came to my late husband's Memorial Service on May 22nd for a bit during the visitation part to support me in my grief. They knew how much my husband meant to them, for he was an unofficial advisor to Tim during his Congressional campaigns down in the 1st CD, and for his friendship when Tim needed it. Tim took time out of his very busy schedule to come to honor a dear friend who had just died. Not as a former Congressman or Governor, but as a dear friend mourning the loss of another dear friend. The Floral arrangement that came the next day from him and Gwen lasted almost 2 weeks. I still have the card and they signed the Remembrance Book as well.

Tim Walz is a man of good character, ethics, empathy, and compassion. He is not finished with politics at all.

You think he’s going to run for re election or maybe senate? Because he’s never going to be president.

I anticipate he will run for President in 2028. He is expected to run for Governor for 2026. I think people underestimate him (and his popularity). His authenticity makes him different from the others and that is appealing.

He was on a losing ticket. That never bodes well for future efforts and I don’t see him bucking that trend.

Newsom isn't perfect, but he's 10,000% better than what we've got, now. Hell, he'd probably appoint a sane, qualified person with no history of drug abuse to oversee national health policy. That would be nice.

I'm almost as LGBTQ positive as possible I think, but as a part of that community I see the brewing civil war between the Trans and LGB NO T community. I also see on social media the rise of the Gay Republicans and we need to treat the issue of Transgendered people very carefully. Over 7% of America is gay and losing even a small part of that to the Reps is going to hurt us badly, Trans or otherwise.

I know that his view is popular, but if you take 30% of the Dem voting bloc out, he will absolutely struggle to make it past the first round in the primary and possibly even the main event.

All of them. He’s no different. I will say that the responses in this thread tell me that his image here has been largely rehabilitated here in recent days. Didn’t take much for that to happen either, which really punches a hole in the lazy “he’s got no chance” takes I see periodically.

Problem is, with the Jury system, if you post something controversial you take your chances. That lends to people not taking views that may be against the mainstream Dem viewpoint, so 30% of Dems may not post what they feel because they're afraid of being hidden by the majority. They see a thread has the support of the majority in the thread, they won't post anything to countermand the majority thought process. I've had a few hides, some rightly, in this manner. I just don't GAF about hides so I speak what's on my mind.

It'll be an interesting primary season, that's the most certain thing I can say.

Also, the “drop the T” segment of the LGBTQ+ community is extremely fringe. I’ve never met one irl despite being heavily involved in the community. The LGBTQ+ community voted almost unanimously for Kamala Harris.

Unfortunately even up here in New York, the "Drop the T" element is fairly large. At a few of my local LGBT+ meetings, not an insignificant amount have left the grouping and started their own separate element.

Honestly, I only know two or three transgendered people myself and they're as galled as I am with all of this, feeling there's no clear way forward. I'm inclined to agree.

I would honestly be shocked to find one trans-exclusive group that is well-organized (eg not just a random group someone created and advertised with only a few people). Every LGBTQ+ group I’ve been to is still very trans-affirming. If you could DM me the group, I would be interested to know more about it.

I go to a bunch of LGBTQ+ meetups. If someone wanted to split off, they would probably be looked at poorly by almost everyone in the group. I’ve literally never encountered transphobia in any of those groups.

Unfortunately I'm on the "out" group, as they're fairly extremist it seems and saw me as an outsider. They're of the mind that a bisexual man with a wife is just straight. I'm not, but... I don't know. So I don't have access to that particular crew any more and they don't show up at our bowling meetups. (As an aside, even if I had an in with them, I wouldn't offer it online. Nothing said about you, but I try to keep my online footprint fairly small. Nothing personal, friend!)

As you said though, those of us remaining in our crew don't look too fondly on that particular group. I can only imagine what they think of us.

I do believe Gavin Newsom will be our next President and will do a terrific job.

We have many excellent potential Dem candidates, but in my opinion, none are more electable than Newsom.

At 57, he's also young enough to attract young, liberal voters.

After 2024, it may be too soon for another ‘liberal’ from California – regardless the gender and race difference.

like 1861, only this time the states are trying to protect people from the federal government instead of fighting the feds for the right to enslave them. For that reason I would expect the strongest candidate to be one of the Dem governors - if not Newsom, then Beshear or Walz or Moore, or Pritzker or Shapiro, maybe another one. The governors are on the front lines vs. Trump while most of the Congresscritters are just dithering.

CA has been demonized to the hilt over the last few years with San Fran's issues, the taxes, and now the riots.

The midwest would be easy pickings for the red team.
Add that to blue team folks that demand ideological purity and that adds up to a "Close, but no cigar" moment.

BTW, the majority of the country LOVES the idea of politicians working for them on bi-partisan issues. I know it makes people here and on Free Republic crazy but the middle just wants stuff to get done.

Moore/Whitmer is my preferred ticket.

If we lose to Vance or Rubio in '28 we'll become a permanent opposition party. That's not good for us or the country.

I’ve had Gavin pegged as a future President for a long time now. He has the “it” factor. Which, of course, means he can speak well and is movie star handsome. Americans are shallow. That matters.
