My hometown of Silver City NM has wildfires raging

around them. My best friend lives on the road to Pinos Altos. Scary stuff. (Trout Fire)

I have downloaded Watch Duty.

Fire 6 miles at best from her house now. She has plans resources and help.

Responsible for elderly and cancer victims she herself not young and not so able. Younger people to call on

Frightening.

I wonder if you have any federal paid for fire fighters. I've heard that the DOGE cuts really killed off the forest service fire season hot shots.

he said, "We had to fight for it."

https://sourcenm.com/2025/06/03/nm-wildfire-dispatch-centers-no-longer-face-threat-of-closure-heinrich-says/

In early March, Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency listed two national forest supervisor’s offices in Albuquerque and Silver City among several hundred announced lease closures aimed at cutting federal spending.

The offices also housed interagency wildfire dispatch centers, which house equipment and personnel crucial to ensuring that small wildfire starts are quickly noticed and extinguished before they become larger.

Heinrich questioned Agriculture Department Secretary Brooke Rollins about the centers recently during her testimony before a Senate committee. He confirmed Tuesday in a statement to Source New Mexico that the dispatch centers would remain open.

“I’m proud to announce that the Interagency Dispatch Centers in Albuquerque and Silver City will be staying open,” he said. “These centers are essential to help protect New Mexicans during wildfires, floods, and other emergencies. That’s why I called Secretary Rollins as soon as I heard that DOGE was planning to close them. Today, we put an end to DOGE’s reckless efforts.”

About 500 offices remain on the DOGE list, down from roughly 750 in early March, according to a Source NM review. Many, but not all, Agriculture Department offices have been removed from the list.

It is close to Truth or Consequences. The Gila wilderness (black range) is in between. It’s my growing up town 1976-80 we have lived in Albuquerque since then we have many friends there still. I can’t remember a fire getting that close before. My best friend lives in a wooded area on the way to Pinos Altos. And they are now on red alert in Pinos Altos. A tiny old mining town on the Continental Divide.

It was hard to tell on other maps but being able to zoom in helped a lot. I can also monitor the planes and helicopters which was interesting because a few flew over here on their way to the Pacific Palisades fire. I was wondering if there was another fire near me but I could see that where they were on the map i real time. You have to become a member to use that feature though.

Sort of a volunteer type collaboration of locals in conjunction with the forest service

Thanks for your replies. It’s hard. Moved there in 5th grade (1974?) around the time of the watergate hearings. Was married there yada yada. The people there kind of took care of me. As my home life wasn’t good. Silver city and my teachers and friends’ parents sort of raised me.

Love DU.

I'm so sorry to hear about the fire. I live in Albuquerque and hadn't heard about the fire. I haven't been down that way in many years. Such a beautiful area. My parents used to live in Elephant Butte and my mother always loved to go to Silver City.
I really hope the fire crews are able to get it contained. It's going to be a long, hot summer, I'm afraid.

Came really, really close to buying a cabin up next to the national forest to live in full time. But so far to drive for groceries and so expensive once you got to the grocery store in Springerville, AZ. But damn I sure love me some New Mexico. Grajeeated from NMSU back in the dinosaur days. Mother Nature please send some rain down there.

I don't expect any federal help for fires this year. We have a new fire today about 45 min from here in our wine valley area.

I know that area very well and am so saddened to see it. And as far as I can tell all of the folks up a round the Cliff Dwelling Monument area are cut off from the south? That is terrifying! Please stay safe!
