Is a loathsome, misogynistic theocracy that is responsible for the death of thousands of people - probably millions. They've been a state sponsor of terrorism since 1979. They were directly and indirectly responsible for hundreds of terrorist attacks. I'd love to see it fall and a western-style democracy rise up, like it was in the 1950's before the CIA ousted it.
That being said, "regime change" needs to come from within. We made a fucking mess out of both Iraq and Afghanistan. This is even worse, because at least we had semi-competent people in charge under Shrub. This is not going to end well.

(129,047 posts)killed a lot of innocent civilians and didn't seem to have done it much good in the long run. I would have thought we'd learned our lesson about regime change in the ME, but apparently not.

(80 posts)Everything you said is exactly what we as the US have been doing for years. I guess it is ok because we do it? Like domestic terrorism is not terrorism if it is done under the guise of white supremacy.

(129,047 posts)They understood the mechanics of government, and used them in ways that proved to be destructive. Their incompetence was ideological, the failure to understand that regime change imposed by military invasion is rarely successful - especially in the Middle East with its history of rivalries and hatreds having nothing to do with us. Kegbreath and stooges are operationally incompetent - doing stupid things stupidly.

(129,047 posts)all that stuff about interventionism and regime change through military strength. Trump has no governing philosophy; he just wants to show off how tough he is. He was loudly anti-intervention until he got the opportunity to flash his dick for Bibi.

"Since World War Two the United States has attempted to overthrow more than fifty foreign governments, it has dropped bombs on the people of around thirty countries, has attempted to assassinate some sixty foreign leaders, helped to suppress dozens of populist or nationalist movements, has tortured many thousands, and seriously and illegally intervened in one way or another in virtually every country on the planet, in the process of which the U.S. has caused the end of life for several million people, and condemned many millions more to a life of agony and despair."
William Blum, in a speech at the University of Vermont, 2007

(9,389 posts)have killed untold starving children + people and bankrupted farmers (with USAID contracts cuts) without providing any real evidence of frauds and abuses (just because they're cruel f*cks) in just 5 months.
The US also decimated the first nations (but that was hundreds of years ago...).
No lessons to give.

(5,615 posts)This is completely the UK & USA's fault. Iran was a moderate democracy until the early 50s overthrow. And to be frank the wealthy have pushed all three Abrahamic religions to be infested with religous zelots to fuel their murder and rape of natural resources creating this now unstoppable climate collapse.

(1,862 posts)there is no reason to assume that it will be for the better. Even more radical elements will be empowered by Israel and the US attacking and there could be a very dangerous failed state/proxy war situation.

(15,361 posts)Iran had a democratically elected government in 1953. Britain had developed and controlled their oil production during colonial rule, then Iran nationalized the industry. Britain imposed harsh economic sanctions, so Iran turned to the Soviet Union for trade.
Cold War politics came into play, and the US helped Britain stage a coup which brought the Shah to power. After a quarter century of corrupt repressive rule, the Shah was overthrown in 1979 during the Islamation Revolution that brought the Ayatollah to power.
In 1980, with backing from the USA, Saddam Hussein launched a bloody invasion of Iran that was finally repelled 8 years later.
It should come as no surprise they regard us as the Great Satan, and would seek to build the ultimate deterrent.
The best chance to prevent that from happening was the multinational nuclear inspection deal of 2015, which Trump tore up in his first term.
Regime change in Iran? Nothing unites a country like an attack from a hated enemy. Ain't gonna happen short of bombing the country into a devasted hellscape like Gaza, but this is a nation of 92 million people.
Death, destruction, trajedy and suffering on a massive scale. Bibi, Donald, and the Magaverse may salivate at that prospect, but I say NOT IN MY NAME.
