Leader Schumer Statement on Donald Trump's unilateral military action in Iran

Leader Schumer Statement On U.S. Strikes On Iran

New York, N.Y. – Today, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) released the following statement after President Trump announced that the United States struck targets in Iran:

“President Trump must provide the American people and Congress clear answers on the actions taken tonight and their implications for the safety of Americans. No president should be allowed to unilaterally march this nation into something as consequential as war with erratic threats and no strategy. Confronting Iran’s ruthless campaign of terror, nuclear ambitions, and regional aggression demands strength, resolve, and strategic clarity. The danger of wider, longer, and more devastating war has now dramatically increased.

“We must enforce the War Powers Act and I’m urging Leader Thune to put it on the Senate floor immediately. I am voting for it and implore all Senators on both sides of the aisle to vote for it.”

But I'm sure that Schumer openly and unequivocally condemned Trump for unilaterally starting a war with a sovereign nation that posed no threat to us, right?

He's good like that.

In summary, he’s saying tRump can’t do what he’s doing without the war measures act being invoked, so bring it to the floor, and he’ll encourage everyone to vote for it, and then it’s all good.

If that’s what’s he’s saying, that’s not courage, that’s capitulation via correct procedure…🙄

before I saw your post.

His only point, evidently, is that this was such a great idea we ought to make sure it is in the law that Trump can do this every day of the week, and twice on Sundays.

since it already is a federal law. But, regardless of what I don't understand, when I read the wording of the Act, seems to be no doubt that tRump broke federal law by ordering that strike (yeah, I know, what's one MORE broken law?)

The War Powers Resolution (also known as the War Powers Resolution of 1973 or the War Powers Act) (50 U.S.C. ch. 33) is a federal law intended to check the U.S. president's power to commit the United States to an armed conflict without the consent of the U.S. Congress. The resolution was adopted in the form of a United States congressional joint resolution. It provides that the president can send the U.S. Armed Forces into action abroad only by declaration of war by Congress, "statutory authorization", or in case of "a national emergency created by attack upon the United States, its territories or possessions, or its armed forces".

who wer not completely opposed to bombing those deep nuclear storage sites since that action likely saved a lot of Israeli lives (their plan was to send in IDF commandos to fight their way in and set charges).

What I think most of us don't want to see is any sort of a land war there, it would be as protracted and futile as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

We're going to be walking kind of a fine line here, Yes, clear the Strait of Hormuz of Iranian warships and mines. No, don't try to clear Iranian cities of either the IRGC, their police, or Iranians by bombing or sending in troops. Yes to giving Israel air support if they request it. No to trying to tell Iranians how to run their country--we tried that in 1953 and that's how we ended up in this mess.

Unfortunately, Congress is not our best hope, not with the Marshmallow in charge of the House. What we have to hope is that the polls, which will rise for King Yosemite Sam when he sends in the bombers will drop like stones every time he even mentions ground troops, and I do think that will happen. That's what we're up against and we have to hope a majority of people in the US are sick of Middle Eastern quagmires and don't want another one quite this soon.
