from Fox Business news:
John Catsimatidis, the CEO of grocery chain Gristedes, found fault with Mamdanis plan, saying the business couldn't compete in the market if there are city-run supermarkets.
"If the city of New York is going socialist, I will definitely close, or sell, or move or franchise the Gristedes locations," Catsimatidis told FOX Business. He will also contemplate moving his corporate offices to New Jersey. Catsimatidis said that he won't make this decision after the primary election.

(54,248 posts)John Catsimatidis has a sour outlook towards NYC politics. For one thing, he's a failed candidate for NYC mayor, twice I believe. He couldn't even win the primaries. For another thing, he owns Red Apple Radio which includes RW radio station, WABC, which he wants to be regarded as a FOX station. And for another thing, Cats wants to be regarded as a power broker. TSF only seems to appear on WABC. Cats is invited to Marl-A-Lago. And lastly, Cats and all the hosts of his talk radio shows hated and condemned current mayor Eric Adams -- until TSF pardoned him. Now Adams is invited on the shows; there's less criticism of him. Oh, and BTW, Cats has been reduced to making public service announcements on air, begging for commercial advertising as business seem to eschew the RW format as a way to garner more customers.
And he looks like a Hobbit.

Don't let the door hit you where the good door split you, Mr.Catsimatidis.

(1,193 posts)I believe he is proposing city-owned stores for under-served areas that are shunned by private grocery store operators.
Mamdanis proposal is consistent with the Social Democratic principle of using government to fill in where the market fails. I think city-owned, or possibly subsidized grocery stores is an idea that could work in high density areas that are under-served.
I live in a patch of urban sprawl in the PNW. The closest grocery store is a ten minute drive, and the quality of the store has declined for the last thirty years. It doesnt resemble something you would expect in a developed country. Many people drive much further to avoid that store, or just order deliveries from some other stores. The economics of food distribution seems to be going from bad to worse in the US.
This summer I visited Hamburg and I'm staying in Helsinki for ~ two months. These are livable cities with high walkability and excellent transport systems. There are four really good grocery stores within walking distance (5 minutes to 15 minutes) from where I live. There are wide sidewalks with adjacent bicycle lanes that are heavily used. Delivery people go whizzing by on bicycles and electric scooters, including one-wheelers. A delivery start-up recently put robot delivery boys into operation.
Why can't Americans have nice things?

(4,765 posts)Here the majority of people want big houses with lots of space and low density. That creates a huge burden for infrastructure and taxes.
