Our friend Sam, who is from Liberia, was pulled over by local cops in a traffic stop. It's unclear to me why they pulled him over; he was coming home from work, not speeding (you can't speed on our road right now because it's closed except to local residents--that may be why he was pulled over; he's the only black person who lives in this neighborhood). Anyway, the cops pulled him over and found that his vehicle registration had expired.
He called us, and my husband went to meet him on the road. The sheriff of Bucks County has been criticized for cooperating with ICE agents, so we were terrified, as was of course Sam. Sam is here legally and in fact had just the day before received papers extending his work visa. We were all afraid he would be taken nonetheless.
It turned out the cop was cool and let Sam go with a warning. He came to our house and renewed his registration online.
It was a sickening experience.
Sam has lived and worked here many years. He pays taxes. He has never committed a crime (until last night, I guess). He is a kind and gentle man who takes his grandmother to church every Sunday morning.
We all had a beer and caught our breath.
Until it happens to you, the fear that someone you care about with be disappeared is like nothing you've ever experienced.

(2,903 posts)He said the Democratic Congressional members voted against the Big Horrible Bill because they hate Trump.
The worlds biggest narcissist of course makes it all about him. But then Trump followed that with I hate Democrats, I really do.
Even though he was speaking of Congressional members, you can guess where this is going. He will end up blaming all progressives as the enemy and now that he has billions of dollars at hand to build up his personal Gestapo and build more for-profit prisons, he is going to work on retribution against all of his perceived enemies.
The loss of immigrant labor getting deported will be replaced by American citizens thrown in jail performing forced labor. Trump has repeatedly expressed admiration for brutal dictators in other countries and he wants to bring that brand of rule to our country.

That is absolutely correct. It is TERRIFYING. Without giving details, I am petrified. I know they thrive in the cruelty and want us all living in fear, but

(1,102 posts)Yes this is a very bad situation. But even as bad as this is, it would be far far worse if you lived in Russia or Iran or China or many other places.
Not to say that one day in the future the USA may become like Russia. Surely Trump would like to take us there. But it has not happened to you yet and at least for today you can still post freely here and express yourself.
Why live in fear? If you have done everything you can then you have to let it go. Because no matter what you do, you cannot outsmart birth and death. Death is the great equalizer. Even the most brutal dictator with the greatest power will be taking the dirt nap one day.

(11,808 posts)People can watch ICE raids 24/7 on their phones and STILL there is NO massive outrage. What a weak pathetic country we are.
Have you missed all the protests like No Kings? There's another nationwide protest today, and another later this month. GO!

(1,102 posts)Just watch people walking around with their nose in their electronic toys if you want to know why there is no outrage. We are a natino of sheep who have been mesmerized by Corporate Amerika for decades. They dumbed us down so they could peddle crap to us and now the Fascist Right is having an easy time putting the boot on the neck of our dumbed down populace.

(19,070 posts)Just another day in AmeriKKKa. (can't believe I'm saying that about Bucks County though)
I'm glad the cop let him go. Probably not overtly racist, just trained to stop people who "don't look right for the neighborhood" and there you are.
Your friend needs to know, he needs to keep up with stupid paperwork like that, because the next cop might not be so decent.

(31,139 posts)born here, white. I learned through DNA that I have a direct line to people who lived in pre-revolutionary America.
But I have neighbors. People who haven't been here that long. who are not "christian." Someone I know who is in real jeopardy although he came here as an infant and is now in his 40s. I am hoping he chooses to leave the US as it is an option for him and would be so much better to stay here long enough for them to kidnap and rendition him.
with the amount of money they gave to ICE yesterday it's a whole new world for them. they've already proved they'll steal people directly from the courthouse, out of their schools, they've left minor children alone on the sidewalk as they whisked the parent away from them. then they spirit them away to hellholes in other states or even other countries where it's a good bet these people will die or never be seen by their loved ones again.
it's truly a horror story.
I'm really glad that your neighbor is safe and hope he can stay safe. But I don't believe that any of us is safe until we are all safe.

(114,398 posts)and iit finally dawned on me: both our states have abolished qualified immunity. That means if these guys come in and start acting like complete assholes, they're the ones who can be busted and charged for things like assault and kidnapping and can't hide behind their jobs to avoid prosecution. It might be an unintended onsequence of some progressive legislation passed out here in the wild west.

(25,961 posts)For the past about 16 years I've lived in two different heavily Hispanic neighborhoods in NYC.
I definitely hope ICE does not encroach any further into these, and other similar neighborhoods. I hope I never see an ICE vehicle, or ICE officers let alone the vicious fakes in my nabe.
I do my best to compartmentalize my various drumphf/Repugs related worries, and fears with a spike of them here, and there.
Of course, I do worry about my neighbors re ICE as well.

(11 posts)Someplace on DU or was it Bluesky? I read about an app for tracking ICE. Does it provide a way to alert a neighborhood if jackboots are on the way?
Maybe call local police ASAP when ICE is on the way. Perhaps good cops will enforce identification or prevent anonymous masked abductions.
Some TV stations have reporting phones to notify of a situation - they will often roll the cameras quickly.
Are there state anti-bullying agencies or watchdogs to call?
I think we need to become creative; look for ways to peacefully reveal wrongdoing, RESIST!

(1,106 posts)It works on iPhones. Not iPads for now. Its called ICEblock. It doesnt actually track them, but it gives locations when sighted. Some of you might want to look into it. Its set us to avoid ice encounters.
