Gunn, writer-director of Superman and co-CEO of DC Studios, told The Sunday Times over the weekend the superhero movie is the story of America, stating it is about an immigrant that came from other places and how basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost.
Gunns comments were swiftly criticized by right-wing commentators, including Kellyanne Conway, who said in a Fox News segment Monday people dont go to the movie theater to be lectured to and to have somebody throw their ideology onto us.
Fox News host Jesse Watters joked Supermans cape reads MS-13, the name of an international gang designated by the United States as a foreign terrorist organization, and he questioned whether Superman is from Uganda and whether theres a love scene with Batman and Robin.
During the Fox News segment, a chyron on the screen read: Superwoke.
Other right-wing commentators, like Ben Shapiro, Tim Pool and widely followed right-wing X accounts like End Wokeness, piled onto the criticism in social media posts and YouTube videos, making Superman the latest movie deemed woke to be targeted by conservative critics.

They are also composed of a higher percentage of economic losers. They have been particularly taken advantage of by billionaires, but are generally too stupid to realize it. So they revere them. They are also sure that the goobermint is the reason they have not done better economically, that it is the only reason they are not millionaires.
They generally work as hard as the other 50% because Americans in general do work hard. But they have outsized ideas of their own abilities and of the power of red states. They think they live in producer states and Democrats live in "taker" states whereas the truth is the other way around.

They say they're the good guys, these MAGAts, but they can't look too closely at the things they do or say, because deep down they know that they are not the good guys and it makes them angry.

Superman is Jewish. Ill add the AI overview below (which is accurate). He drops in the middle of Kansas, cant let anyone know what he is, and feels like he has to be better-always. He has to show that hes of good character (truth and justice).
*suggest - like theyd ever use that word. Everything is definitive
While Superman himself isn't explicitly Jewish in the comics, his creation and backstory are deeply influenced by the Jewish heritage of his creators, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.
Here's why many see Superman as a Jewish allegory:
Jewish creators: Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, who created Superman, were both Jewish and sons of immigrants from Eastern Europe fleeing antisemitism. Their experiences likely shaped many aspects of the character.
Immigrant narrative: Superman's story of being sent from a dying world (Krypton) to a new land (Earth) and assimilating while retaining his true identity resonates with the immigrant experience, particularly that of Jewish immigrants to the United States. His alter-ego, Clark Kent, hiding his true identity can be seen as mirroring the assimilation process.
Biblical parallels:
Moses: Superman's origin story of being sent away in a vessel to escape destruction before being raised by another family is reminiscent of the story of Moses.
Samson: His immense strength and fighting for justice echo the biblical figure of Samson.

(8,297 posts)The movie will be either good or not. GOD FORBID there are messages of civility and humanity in it. If that's not your bag then I am sure you can get over it.
You don't goto the movies to be "preached to" or have ideology advanced, but the very moment some movie comes out with a "right wing" bend they don't say the same thing.
My view is art should do art. NO boundries. It can be left wing or right wing and let the chips fall where they may.
If the shit is good I'll like it. I mean I think Merle Haggard's song Okie From Musgokee is a good song, I love it. I don't really agree with the point he's trying to make, but he's honest and the delivery is excellent. I am able to listen to stuff or even see stuff I may not agree with.
How about "Sweet Home Alabama". It showed the Liberal as a stuffy bunch of assholes and the country people as wonderful salt of the earth people who even EMBRACED their gay friend. Is that more of what you want KellyAnne? I mean except for the gay part.

I was a small kid watching Superman on our B/W TV, and I just drank that up. I grew up believing that Truth, Justice, and the American Way were good things not bad as part of an ethical guide for life.

Don't we have enough IRL instances of injustice to expose? Does arguing over a cartoon character catalyze the conversation?

But then again, these are the same mentalities who, for more than two seasons, hadn't realized Homelander (The Boyz) was a sick fk sociopath.
(which should tell us something)
So the 'argument' isn't over fictional characters, but about ideals, ideologies, and principles..
about who rejects them, and WHY.

(25,512 posts)That simple fact colors every comic, movie, cartoon, or TV series in which the character's ever appeared. It's as important to his identity as wealthy-orphan is to Batman's. Numerous movies have depicted his illegal arrival in the USA, and somehow none ever ran into this bullshit ideology until now. How far we have fallen...

(1,271 posts)...Look at books/comics/movies/etc and come up with themes, or say the story is really about X -- and I kinda just roll my eyes (for instance one of my professors in college who argued forcefully that Jaws was really about the Vietnam War). But the theme of Superman being an immigrant is obvious and has been from the 1930s. Maybe not an illegal immigrant per se, but definitely not from here, and his adoption of our values to help save us, is strikingly obvious.
