A comment on another post reminded me of the HUAC and how we lived in fear of it when I was in junior high and high school. I was always being told that anything I did would become a part of my "permanent record." If that's what they mean by "second childhood " - maybe the juvenile language is exactly appropriate. (Not that I used it then. I was living in fear too.)

I think my first political memory was asking all my aunts & uncles at extended family get-together whether they were voting for JFK. One possibly older by 11 years cousin and husband maaaaybe was going to vote for Nixon. I think I thought, "Boooo.". 😄

Then Missle Crisis, JFK assassination, onward.

and I'm not old enough to remember MCCarthy personally. The HUAC may have been in existence while he was active - he was in the Senate himself. But oh boy, do I remember the HUAC - sure, we laughed at it, but it was a real danger and we knew it.

Instead of patting each other on the back they should try to answer questions honestly. I know that's something foreign to them but if you don't know the answer just say you don't know instead of talking around it. If there's information you can immediately divulge just say you can't divulge that at this time and explain why.

During a tragedy, being honest with those affected is the best policy.
