the Blue Angels, doing a practice run.
They close to within 18 inches.

(79,742 posts)I think they are a bit more edgy and showy than the USAF Thunderbirds.
Even their practice runs are amazing and jaw dropping.
(Hate to admit it since I am a USAF brat.)

(5,250 posts)And while they both push the extreme. the Angels are, as you said, just a little more insane.
I mean, even in this training video they're 18 inches or so apart, at 500mph

(79,742 posts)There was a cloud cover so they were doing a low altitude practice.
They were totally insane and scared the crap out of me it was so amazing.
Keep in mind I am a USAF brat and lived next to flight lines and runways growing up.
And watched young hotdog pilots do their thing.
If I were the enemy and saw the BA coming after me I would surrender on the spot.

(11,408 posts)They were doing practice runs just like this video. They were literally right above us doing flying like this. Crazy stuff and very impressive.

(29,449 posts)but I had the privilege of making a couple of anti submarine patrols on a P-3 Orion - a four-engine turboprop plane that flew some parts of the mission at 300 knots at about 50 feet off the water. Exhilarating.

(13,284 posts)It's an Interactive video. Use your mouse to look around the formation during a show routine. Don't forget to use full screen!
2:40 is the start of the "beauty pass," where the distance between wingtips is measured in inches. This maneuver is the Blues' signature pass, where the formation appears to blend into one airplane.

(5,832 posts)I've seen the USAF Thunderbirds (in 3 different aircraft - F-4 Phantom II, T-38 Talon, and F-16 Fighting Falcon), the Blue Angels, the Canadian Snowbirds, the British Red Arrows, and the Italian Frecce Tricolori flight demonstration teams through the years. Each has their own unique style and 'flavor' of their shows. The Blue Angels are project speed and sheer power. The Thunderbirds seem to be a little more 'graceful' with ultra-high precision. The Red Arrows and Frecce Tricolori both seemingly put a lot of planes in the air and have visually stunning shows with multi-colored smoke, and the Snowbirds have a somewhat more laid-back and graceful show.
All are amazing pilots, and I wouldn't pass up the chance to see any of them when given the opportunity.
Here in Seattle we'll have the Blues again. We usually go down to the Museum of Flight for their 'Jet Blast Bash' and watch them take off, see a few of their high maneuvers over the ridge between Boeing Field and Lake Washington, and then their landing.

(63 posts)I love this! My uncle was an ace Navy pilot during WWII and was tapped to make training films, and did some flying for a war movie made during that era. This is just amazing footage! The upside down segment .... yikes! I think it was 2023, when there was an all women flyover of Navy pilots at the Super Bowl commemorating 50 years of female pilots in the Navy. That was epic, too.
