because the essence of fascism is not how the country is governed, but how the officially supported social group is put above other social groups. The abuse and oppression of those not aligned with the fascist subculture is the foundation of the whole movement. The authoritarian government is secondary, and they don't care much how it actually governs. It's popular only when it's establishing the desired oppression of targeted groups.

From what I've seen of polling lately, it looks like the Big Baleful Bill hurt Trump's popularity, but it went back up again once the news cycle was more about Alligator Auschwitz. That horrific concentration camp is exactly what MAGA wants from their government.
