So this is how they are going to do it.
Snip
President Trump built his legacy in part on the power of a deal and surely he would agree that when the United States gives its word, it must stand by it, Maxwells attorney, David Oscar Markus, said in a statement. We are appealing not only to the Supreme Court but to the president himself to recognize how profoundly unjust it is to scapegoat Ghislaine Maxwell for Epsteins crimes, especially when the government promised she would not be prosecuted.

(1,391 posts)The SC has no accountability anyways (not that Trump has much), but people are less likely to hold the republicans accountable in the midterms based on a SC ruling, rather than an action by Trump.
We have seen that the SC is willing to rubber stamp most of his agenda, and dont tell me the RW justices dont have a back channel (more likely a direct channel) to the WH.

(78,799 posts)Last September, the Second U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals' three judges upheld her conviction and sentence. I doubt the USSC will even hear her appeal. It seems so unlikely, that her brother send the 50th birthday book to the WSJ, as a "hint" to the felon that if he fails to either reduce her sentence or pardon her, there is more to come. Note that the administration's reaction was to have the felon's lawyer, disguised as #2 at the DOJ, set up the meetings with her to talk shop. It is worth noting that he is a good friend of her attorney.

(46,037 posts)That being said, there is a split in the circuits on the underlying legal question, which greatly increases the chances the Court will grant the petition for cert. That doesn't mean, however, that she wins. It means the case will be scheduled for briefing and argument in the fall and that a decision, whenever it comes down, could go either way.

(46,037 posts)A scapegoat is someone who is blamed for the wrongdoings, mistakes, or faults of others.
Maxwell was convicted of having assisted, facilitated, and participated in Jeffrey Epsteins abuse of minor girls by, among other things, helping Epstein to recruit, groom, and ultimately abuse victims known to her to be under the age of 18 -- as young as 14 years old when they were groomed and abused by her and Epstein. The evidence established that she not only procured under age victims -- children -- for Epstein to abuse, she herself at times participated in the sexual activity.

(46,037 posts)The legal question presented involves a split in how different circuits apply non-prosecution agreements. If the Court grants the petition, all it means is the the case will be set for briefing and argument in the fall and that a decision, whenever it comes, could go either way: they could agree with those appeals court precedents that hold such an agreement only is binding in the district where it is entered -- and Maxwell loses --or they could agree with those appeals court precedents that hold such an agreement is binding on all districts -- and Maxwell then wins.
