Looks like Abbot is asking the Texas supreme court to declare Gene Wu's seat vacant, and Trump is threatening to send the FBI after the absent Texas reps.
Rachel said it, it's no longer theoretical, we are in an authoritarian regime.
Buckle up.

(8,680 posts)are in historically marginal groups that are already targeted for the hate and abuse by the MAGA fascists the time grows short to be able to be free to relocate if they have the means and desire to do so. Look at the first 6 months. Does anybody realistically think the next 6 to 12 months is going to bring a pullback from the fascists? This is going to go more and more extreme.
There is no cavalry coming to help us. The countries around the world are either making plans for their own changes to deal with the fascists or they are in various stages of capitulation to the extortion.

They know what it takes to oust a fascist regime: its costly, bloody and takes years.
Too many Americans live in the fantasy world of it cant happen here. They will need to learn the hard way. Unfortunately for the rest of us.

(6,019 posts)I've never considered myself to be in a marginalized group but I am of Mexican descent, both mother & father, so definitely in a minority group....and even though I am a U.S. citizen, I was born in Munich Germany. Those are 2 strikes against me according to this regime. There is no guarantee my US citizenship can act a protection shield against the ICE Gestapo. I'm of the age I can retire and I have some means....so I'm doing as one history professor recently said..."When fascism comes, you leave."

When trump said "homegrowns" he meant citizens of the targeted population.

(7,736 posts)what happens when FASCISTS become convinced they have the run of the place.
But hey, at least it serves as a distraction from all the BLOOD of those flood victims Abbott & Co. have on their hands because THEY squandered and/or refused to use federal funds GIVEN to them, to mitigate the preventable loss of LIVES to disaster.

(3,323 posts)The vast bulk of people do not understand "autocratic,"
Call it what it is: DICTATOR.
Compare Trump the Hitler.
Stop it with the goddam academic language that the people who shop at WalMart do not understand. This is all part of why we Democrats lost -- we talk over their heads, they think we look down on them because of our academic language. Maybe they are right.
Just stop it. Use plain language.
Do not say AUTOCRAT or AUTOCRATIC. Say DICTATOR.

(10,961 posts)Is authoritarian the same as dictatorship?
As nouns the difference between authoritarian and dictatorship is that authoritarian is one who commands absolute obedience to his or her authority while dictatorship is a type of government where absolute sovereignty is allotted to an individual or a small clique. As an adjective authoritarian is of, or relating to, absolute obedience to an authority.
Everyone knows what a dictator is. Best to use the one they know.

Saw him doing all this but I didn't think the others would let him. The big old GOP, letting a dunce bring them to a point they used to be against.

(1,114 posts)Republicans walked out every year in Oregon as a negotiating tactic. Voters passed an ammendment to the constitution. It meant that after 10 unexcused absences they couldn't rerun for their seat. This hit 10 Republicans who were precluded from reelection.

(318 posts)What the R's did here in Oregon was completely legal at the time. Disgusted citizens put up an initiative and passed a mild remedy. It's still not illegal here, it just has more consequences. IANAL but a quick search doesn't show any similar Texas law. So what laws were broken?

(4,020 posts)I once read a post (I'd like to say it was here, but it may have been on FB) by someone who had lived under an authoritative regime. They described how it doesn't happen in one day with tanks and bullets. It happens slowly over time as we go about our daily lives. Pretty much like frogs in a pot on the stove (my words).
Never imagined we'd be here. Never imagined there'd be enough people in the U.S. to put us here.

(9,362 posts)With what I have seen take place since the 2000 election, none of this is surprising. SCOTUS picked an election winner according to their biases. Civil liberties were eroded and surveillance enhanced under the cover of post-9/11 security. Obamas win ignited the abundant racism that has always undergirded the national culture. Online media put the nations Balkanization into overdrive.
Voila, there you have it.
