Please, if you travel to New York, do not be tempted to take a carriage ride in or near Central Park. These animals are horribly abused, and we must shut down this industry!

A carriage horse collapsed and died in Hells Kitchen this afternoon, just blocks from its stable, drawing shocked reactions from witnesses and reigniting scrutiny of New York Citys horse-drawn carriage industry.

The horse, a 15-year-old mare named Lady, was heading back from Central Park to Clinton Stables on W52nd Street when she stumbled and fell near the corner of W51st Street and 11th Avenue.
According to the NYPD, officers responded to a 911 call at approximately 2:28pm reporting a horse in distress near W51st Street and 11th Avenue, within the Midtown North Precinct. When they arrived, police found a horse attached to a carriage lying on the ground. Police said that no arrests have been made, and investigations remain ongoing.
A deli worker at Farmers Cafe & Market said the incident unfolded right outside their shop. The horse was walking normal until it started turning right onto W51st Street from 11th Ave, he told W42ST. It then appeared to shake, jump and then fell down on its right side. The carriage driver was by himself and he jumped down to the street and was asking us for help. We didnt know what to do.

(17,768 posts)We don't need horse drawn carriages any more at the expense of the animals. People who patronize this are as much to blame. Tax a freaking taxi or walk a block. It isn't fun for the horse to go the same route, day after day after day, pulling a full load. Most of the horses are old and overworked and hot. It is not romantic. It is not an adventure for the kids.
It is perpetuated cruelty.

(1,570 posts)Its hard to say why without medical history or autopsy. Looking at the picture, it seems as though the hind legs lack good muscle but the ribs are not obvious, could be internal parasites along with poor diet. Total conjecture, but the horse was too young to have died from natural causes or old age.

It did not take a genius to figure that out❗
