when it actually means tacky and cheesy when applied to a Palladian-style neoclassical building like the White House. The style was a reaction against the Baroque excesses of the 17th century, which featured a lot of ornate details and a lot of gold, e.g., Versailles. But Versailles' interiors were carefully designed to match the aesthetic of the grand building itself - they weren't the result of someone coming in, looking around and deciding there wasn't enough gold and just slapping bits of filigree and doodads wherever there was a blank space. Versailles isn't tacky and cheesy, but Trump's White House screams white trash.

That thing is the very definition of tackiness and gaudiness. It reeks of someone desperate to show how much money he has...but it, along with so much more, will never get him into the "old money" club he so longs to be a part of.
