(65,577 posts)Only 32 of them had been convicted of crimes in the United States, mostly nonviolent offenses such as shoplifting or traffic violations.
Only six of these 32 men had been convicted of violent crimes, specifically four for assault, one for kidnapping, and one for weapons possession.
The government was aware that at least 130 of the deportees had no criminal records or pending charges in the United States, and their only offense was violating immigration laws.
Around 90% of the men deported to El Salvador had no U.S. criminal record, according to Bloomberg News.
The CBS News program "60 Minutes" found no criminal records for 75% of the Venezuelan men who are currently in the prison.
While most of the records found for the remaining men were for minor, non-violent offenses, approximately a dozen men were accused of murder, rape, assault, and kidnapping.
It is important to note that the Trump administration accused all of these men of being members of the Tren de Aragua gang without providing evidence, according to The Texas Tribune.

(106,625 posts)that Venezuela exchanged for the 238. ramprtd asked "now about those 10 americans released in the deal??? who are these guys, released by venezuela and not greeted home with rose petals?"; in fact, they did get a welcome back
The NYT article has the murderer circled:

Archive link for the 1st Aug NYT article that SpankMe linked to below shows that the State Dept realised during the process they were freeing a triple murderer, didn't like the optics, but didn't seriously think about saying "no, he should stay in prison".
In an internal email exchange that was obtained by The New York Times, State Department officials debated whether to include Mr. Hanid Ortiz in a public statement to be published that afternoon about the people being released, 10 including him.
We had understood that we dont want to refer to him as a hostage or wrongfully detained, which is why we said nine, a press official wrote.
Michael Kozak, the career official who oversees diplomacy in the Western Hemisphere, replied: Well then we probably should not have asked for him. Can we now extradite him to Spain? We did get the S.O.B. released.
Finally, Mr. Kozak made the decision to include him: Well I would stick with 10 as we did ask for and receive 10. He added that the fact that at least one is a bum does not change that fact.

All indications are that this triple murderer is roaming the streets of the USA free, having been in jail for under 7 years. And that's Trump's fault.

(65,577 posts)Thanks for the correction.
Paywalled, but Google "How U.S. Officials Grappled With the Release of a Triple Murderer" and you might get a hit. Also, see NYT article titled "Convicted Murderer Released by Trump From Venezuelan Prison Is Free in U.S.".

He came to the US from Venezuela and served in the US military for something like 19 years. He became a dual Venezuelan/US citizen.
He went to Spain and ended up killing 3 people there because he thought one of them was having an affair with his wife.
He fled to Germany and then to Venezuela where he was arrested for the murders. Venezuela denied extradition to Spain, so he was tried and convicted and sent to prison in Venezuela for 30 years.
In 2023, the US and Venezuela were negotiating prisoner swaps for various reasons, but the Biden administration declined accepting this guy.
But, the Trump State Dep't took him in a prisoner swap, probably owing to incompetence or lack of due diligence. (Or, maybe they took him back in hopes that he would commit another crime on US soil so they can grandstand about other countries not sending us their best.)
Because he was convicted, served time, and then was legally released from prison, it is unclear if he can be extradited to Spain from the US to be tried for this same crime.
Nothing's easy.

(24,584 posts)I appreciate your post but didn't understand that this wasn't your own personal opinion.
When using another article as the basis, it makes sense to stick that reference way up at the top so those of us who like to research more can see it clearly.
