(25,838 posts)Don't agree with much from George Will, but I can tolerate him.
Dr. Phil and Stephen A. Smith? Definitely a pass for me.
Congrats on 240,000 posts, Rhiannon (already added 208 since then!!!)
300,000 is only a few days away at your pace.

(250,299 posts)I once traveled to NYC to see David Letterman's show. We didn't know who was going to going to be on, I used to be responsible for the TV listings for CBS and often they'd announce guests at the last minute. Dave was great, took questions before the show and even after 30+ years, he came out and thanked us all for coming. But his first guest was Dr. Phil, followed by some young actress I'd never heard of before or since, all I remember was that I liked her shoes. And his third guest(s) were some band which involved a lot of smoke and we didn't know if that was intentional or there was a fire.
And thanks for the congrats - I'd likely have a few more by now, but we lost both cable and internet for most of the night, Spectrum was doing an "upgrade" so they said, but at least internet came back in time for me to post Stephen Colbert at the usual time.

(25,838 posts)Consider me envious.
When my wife and I were in New York (the only time we were in NY) about 15 years ago, we got in the standby line for the Conan O'Brien taping. We got tickets! But I can't even remember who a single guest was -- no "big names," for sure. What stood out to me most was how absolutely tiny the studio was. There couldn't have been more than 150 people in the audience at full capacity and it was cramped.
One thing I've always heard/read about the Ed Sullivan Theater is that Dave kept the studio very cool. Do you recall the chill?
And doesn't it boggle your mind how Oprah, a progressive individual, could have given a platform to Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz? They must have hidden their "asshole" vibes much better back then.
Rhiannon12866
(250,299 posts)But you're completely right about the freezing studio! All of the staff who came out on the stage frequently (we had great seats, 5th row right in front of Dave's desk) were wearing parkas - but when there was a break, Dave took off his jacket, he must have been too hot! Sticks in my mind since he was wearing suspenders!
I've also been in the studio audience at The Daily Show - with Jon Stewart. It was warmer there, but at that show they searched you and I was very sorry I brought my purse. That was also a pretty small studio, unlike the Ed Sullivan Theater. IIRC, we sat on bleachers. Jon was really nice too, a comic came out beforehand, then Jon who took questions. And after the show he gave his notes to a woman sitting near me since she'd asked him about them before the show.
And I don't get Dr. Phil or Dr. Oz, either. Oprah is anything but MAGA. However, I do think that Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz must have gotten worse over the years, especially now, since she's pretty savvy and outspoken so she would have seen through their acts.

(61,033 posts)I remember he let it be known that he had contributed a million dollars to Pres. Obama in the 2012 campaign IIRC. Things, and he, sure have changed since then.

(248 posts)who still watches this? Seriously.........he's no longer neutral but has gone full Dennis Miller. a waste of time to watch!

(38,206 posts)Having watched it in the last year, I can say that it shouldn't be on FOX or Newsmax. Maher is no MAGAt.

Oh well, to each their own! Enjoy!

(6,475 posts)Now, does that app to ALL seconding posts, or just those with which you disagree? That doesn't seem right. I mean, seconding a post must happen here a hundreds of times per day. So, you're indicting a large swath of this board.
But, regardless, I'll cede to your obvious expertise on the subject matter.
Abolishinist
(2,887 posts)This only applies to those who second a "fuck so-and-so", and especially when the target is someone the Original Poster is merely providing a guest list for an upcoming show, one which some on this site watch.
I find it very demeaning to Rhiannon to lash out every week that she posts his upcoming show. You don't like him? I completely understand, sometimes I skip a guest or discussion. I tried to watch Club Random several times and thought it was stupid.
Rhiannon's been a member of DU for 22 years, has 240,000 posts, and has also volunteered for MIRT on many occasions. I don't understand the need to show up every week and trash her thread. For what reason?
Xavier Breath
(6,475 posts)They had established the 'Fuck Maher' sentiment long before I started seconding. Why not go off on them? Isn't their repeated comment in each and every thread also "demeaning?" How can "As always" be in any way worse than "Fuck Bill Maher?" It makes zero sense to ignore them to concentrate on me.
Abolishinist
(2,887 posts)The anticipated amount of time/energy expended vs. the return on such investment; i.e., there are those set in their ways, no amount of logic/reason will convince them. I thought a better chance might be had with you.
I have a life outside of DU.
Xavier Breath
(6,475 posts)And, you felt the "better chance" with me best began with a juvenile, vulgar insult? Do I have all of that correctly?
See, here's the thing: you may not like what I said in my first post, and that's certainly your prerogative. But you chose to make it personal, and when confronted, decided to double-down with yet more insults. And the past being a good indicator, all that lies ahead for me in any further interactions with you is just more insults. And, who needs that?
So it's time for us to part ways. I owe that to my own sanity, and besides, the eye rolls from the other posters are nearly audible at this point. So, I'll give them a break and simply wish you a good evening and get back to enjoying the life that I most definitely have.
As a final note, you may rest assured that the next time I choose to respond in a Maher thread, it will be as an original post. I owe that much to you.
Abolishinist
(2,887 posts)I have only so much time to devote to this forum, i.e. I have a life outside DU. Period. And I have no idea what you're referring to as a "juvenile, vulgar insult".
When I stated "The anticipated amount of time/energy expended vs. the return on such investment" my point was that given the two options, #1 to confront the other poster, vs. #2 to confront YOU, I'd much prefer the latter. I've read what #1 has posted, and in my view it would be easily dismissed IN A FORMAL DEBATE. However, such a debate would take time to prepare for, and even after doing so there's no assurance the other side would even show up. Thus my comment regarding "the anticipated amount of time/energy expended vs. the return on such investment", i.e. spending many hours with little return applies to THEM, not YOU.
So I opted to say that I would prefer a discussion with YOU, not because you're impervious to logic/reason, but BECAUSE I believe you would be amenable to such.
But whatever, a good evening to you as well.

(2,887 posts)I can't stomach Dr. Phil, and the few times I've seen Stephen Smith I was rather turned off by him. I'm taping it so I can watch later and fast forward when needed.
Sounds like a good time to install our new TV, as the old one has passed on.
Thanks for posting!
Rhiannon12866
(250,299 posts)Since Spectrum was doing "an upgrade." It's always something.
As for Dr. Phil, he was the main guest when I was fortunate enough to be in David Letterman's studio audience back in the day and he was forgettable then and from what we've heard now, he's on board with TFG. IIRC, Stephen Smith has been on before and I guess we'll hear what George Will has to say... Thanks, as usual.
question everything
(51,701 posts)Like other traditional conservatives he abandoned the party in 2016.
Stephen Smith has become quite popular on many talk shows.
Dr. Phil.. never watched him and have no idea what he can contribute.
But will be looking forward to the opening monologue and the New Rules.
Thanks for keeping posting and ignoring the f**k crowd that cannot be more articulate
Rhiannon12866
(250,299 posts)He was forgettable then and from what we've heard, he's onboard with TFG. However, the other guests sound interesting, guess we'll see! And thanks for the encouraging words, I started posting Bill Maher years ago when the videos posted disappeared in the same day. Things have certainly changed, fewer videos, but as long as he has an audience, I still try to keep up.

(25,838 posts)You might have needed a barf bag. Dave wasn't buying his BS here (but did have him back on the show multiple times).
Rhiannon12866
(250,299 posts)And it had to be much later than this, but the first time I saw TFG was also on Letterman's show. I almost changed the channel since this guy was being such a jerk, complaining to Dave about The Mosque at Ground Zero. But I was glad that I kept watching since Dave, who insisted he knew nothing about politics put him in his place, told him very firmly that this was a planned community center dedicated to peace. I think that was also the time when this jerk brought neckties with him that he was selling, so Dave turned them over to expose the Made in China label. Yay, Dave!
True Dough
(25,838 posts)even though he made himself look like a fool and Dave certainly did his part to magnify that.

(250,299 posts)I've been posting this since Bill Maher was must-see-TV here, back in the day. I do try to ignore the negative replies since if something isn't interesting to me, I just skip over it. *sigh*
And I haven't listened to George Will in ages so that's reason enough to tune in. Thanks again!

(4,913 posts)LOL it's amusing how some can't help themselves and feel a need to insert themselves into targeting every post about maher.
Ironically, it appears that Not A Doctor Phil was a guest and yet still laser focused on maher. Oof.
It's as bad as maher's focus on "woke."
