Several U.S. cities have crime rates exceeding that of Washington, D.C. These include Memphis, St. Louis, Baltimore, and Birmingham, all of which have higher homicide rates per 100,000 residents. New Orleans also has a higher homicide rate than D.C., despite its smaller size.
Notice that with the exception of Baltimore, all of the cities listed above are in red states.
Anyone who thinks what Donnie Rotten pulled in L.A. and now D.C. isn't politically and racially motivated is a complete idiot!

(34,208 posts)I try very hard to be in the house by dark because it isnt safe. I hear gunshots all night.
The police dont come to 911 calls.
My car was stolen and the police refused to help. They dragged their feet filing the report to the point that OnStar locked it down for 24 hours to give them time to get the paperwork filed and wouldnt hold it longer. The car hasnt been seen since.
Its crazy but its a red state so nobody really cares.

https://usafacts.org/articles/which-cities-have-the-highest-murder-rates/Just scroll down to the 9-page chart of per capita murders per city, and look across pages. Note that Chicago, New York, Los Angeles are nowhere near the top ten, Chicago ranking #20, New York ranks #39, LA ranks #60, lower than them all. And this data from their larger metropolitan areas within their counties.
Here's the first page...

More up-to-date rankings, with links, from Google's DeepMind AI in 2025 (sorry not to post the DeepMind URL, but it's eight inches long) ...
St. Louis, Memphis, and New Orleans are frequently cited as having some of the highest gun death rates per capita. Factors like economic instability, poverty, and access to firearms are often linked to these high rates.
Here's a more detailed look:
St. Louis, MO: Security.org reports that St. Louis has the highest number of gun-related injuries and deaths per 10,000 residents.
Memphis, TN: Memphis has a high murder rate, with 71.0 murders per 100,000 residents, according to Safe and Sound Security.
New Orleans, LA: New Orleans has also been identified as having a high rate of gun violence and homicides.
Detroit, MI: Detroit has a high murder rate and struggles with crime, often linked to economic hardships.
Baltimore, MD: Baltimore has faced significant challenges with gun violence and homicides, with high rates of both.
Kansas City, MO: Kansas City has also been cited as having a high rate of gun violence.
Cleveland, OH: Cleveland is another city that experiences high rates of gun violence and homicides.
Minneapolis, MN: Minneapolis is also on the list of cities with high rates of gun violence.
Little Rock, AR: Little Rock is another city that experiences high rates of gun violence.
Note that no matter the source, a couple of smaller cities still stand out for per capital crime, St Louis being the most consistently ranked between #1 and #3.
Here's one more as of May, 2025 ...also note that the biggest per capita crime/murder numbers are not in the nation's largest cities, so the "major cities" label actually means there are the low end population major cities, and then there are the MAJOR major cities whose populations are often 10+ times larger than the others.
More population = more crimes, BUT more 100,000's doesn't equal higher crime per capita rates.

The felon and his henchmen go after Democratic Party majority cities under the Big Lie that Blacks, the poor and the working class are criminal and dangerous. His Big Lie this time is the overarching narrative for cheating his way into a rethug win in 2028. Their culture war lingo is used for "othering" non-white, non-male Americans to divide them and trust only him and his Big Lie; and so they also believe him when he says he is their savior and their retribution for their suffering. His protection racket formula's Big Lies promise them protection against his political enemies who he claims are their enemies, too. Thus, his Big Lies play on their fears and fomenting false grievance.
And like lazy, weak willed children, they believe, and no numbers from the Reality of Earth One will convince them otherwise.

(39 posts)At least Baltimore's violent crime rate has been decreasing like Washington DC's has. So give us locals a little credit.
Yes, Baltimore is a largely crime ridden and impoverished city that has declined when it lost its manufacturing base and the jobs that disappeared with it. The tax base has diminished as the city lost about half of its peak population. Occupation by the military will not eliminate decay, poverty and crime. Trump and his henchmen neither understand that fact nor do they care.
Baltimore has seen a significant decrease in its crime rate, particularly in violent crime, with homicides down 22% and non-fatal shootings down 19% in the first half of 2025 compared to the previous year. This reduction is attributed to a comprehensive public safety strategy that includes community engagement and addressing root causes of violence.

(1,384 posts)But crime is far more complex than Democratic or Republican. It's poverty and opportunity and the loss of jobs and a thousand other things.

(1,384 posts)Birmingham Alabama Randall Woodfin Democrat
Baltimore Maryland Brandon Scott Democrat
Memphis Tennessee Paul Young Democrat
St Louis Missouri Cara Spencer Democrat
New Orleans Louisiana LaToya Cantrell Democrat
The top 20 per Wikipedia (for total crime):
Albuquerque New Mexico Tim Keller Democrat
Memphis Tennessee see above
St Louis Missouri see above
Spokane Washington Lisa Brown Democrat
Oakland California Barbara Lee Democrat
Baltimore Maryland see above
San Francisco California Daniel Laurie Democrat
Detroit Michigan Mike Duggan Democrat until 2024, now independent
Baton Rouge Louisiana Sid Edwards Republican
Anchorage Alaska Suzanne LaFrance the mayor is nonpartisan, but endorsed by the Alaska Democratic Party
Wichita Kansas Lily Wu Republican until 2022, Libertarian since
Cleveland Ohio Justin Bibb Democrat
Tulsa Oklahoma Monroe Nichols Democrat
Kansas City Missouri Quinton Lucas Democrat
Portland Oregon Keith Wilson Democrat
Mobile Alabama Sandy Simpson Republican
Orlando Florida Buddy Dyer Democrat
Tuscon Arizona Regina Romero Democrat
Cincinnati Ohio Aftab Pureval Democrat
Seattle Washington Bruce Howell Democrat
So 16 Democrats (including the nonpartisan given the endorsement, 1 independent, 3 Republicans (including the Libertarian). Doesn't mean we're worse on crime, but there's more opportunities to commit crimes in larger cities. Are many of these in cities in red states sure. Shocking that cities in states with fewer economic opportunities have more crime. But in general, urban areas are statistically more likely to be Democratic.

Wiki notes that results differ if you calculate rate by city limit population vs metro area.
