Trump announces he's placing the DC police department "under direct federal control" and deploying the National Guard in the city

As far as the White House is concerned, this is apparently the first in a series of related steps. After referencing New York City, Baltimore and Oakland by name, the president told the White House press corps in reference to his new gambit, This will go further. Well starting very strongly with D.C.
Crime rates in New York City, Baltimore and Oakland have already sharply improved, and while Trump has repeatedly insisted that crime in nations capital is out of control, in reality, crime in D.C. has dropped.....
As for the latest announcement, Trump also took the opportunity to share some related thoughts about how his newly deployed forces would treat criminal criminal suspects.
"You knock the hell out of them. It's the only language they understand ... you spit and we hit. And they get hit real hard ... now they are allowed to do whatever they want" -- Trump on the police response to crime in DC

As for whether any of this is legal, The Washington Post reported, "Under the Home Rule Act, President Donald Trump can assume control of D.C. police for 48 hours if he 'determines that special conditions of an emergency nature exist which require the use of the Metropolitan Police force for Federal purposes.' The takeover may be extended with approval of the members of Congress who oversee D.C. affairs. Any request of over 30 days must be passed into law."
The presidential announcement, in other words, was the first step, not the last, and the legal and political disputes that will soon follow are likely to be dramatic. Watch this space.

(42,763 posts)Here's why.
Reason 1: It's less about a launching a power grab, and more about maintaining the existing illusion of power. He's about dictatorial power spectacle.
The felon launches his most familiar spectacle (from his growing repertoire) that plays to the RW stereotypes re non-whites and crime, that he knows most folks already believe.
Re DC numbers, his spectacle plays to a timeline of the truth getting out in a familiar sequence:
-- after he holds Leavitt pressers that announce arrests (assuming he's not stopped by Judge Breyer over the Posse Comitatus criminal case against him in San Francisco) https://www.democraticunderground.com/132284508) in other blue cities, and
-- then leaves the left and rw press to sort out all their interpretations and predictions of his actions;
-- over time he'll spread more arrest numbers on platforms, then
-- he'll be told the crime numbers in DC (likely in one of his taped WH pressers) are low, at which point
-- he will take credit for those numbers, then
-- spread that taped segment through the rw echo chamber.
Reason 2: Even though the evidence Judge Breyer has against his "inward" use of the US military is solid, Trump will have his DOJ fight to publicly beat this federal judge, while he berates him in public platforms to gain more sympathy votes from anti-crime voters. Even if the judge (and/or SCOTUS) rule in the CA governor's favor, Trump's overall goal will be to ignore the rulings, and continue to turn the US Military inward, in what will amount to his "unitary executive power" challenging to the upper courts to enforce their rulings.

The military and law enforcement also have large numbers of minorities and women in their ranks.
Not such a perfect "storm", it seems.
In fact, several command level personnel were reassigned in LA as they expressed concern over the legality of their orders.
