Bernie: Congrats to the DNC for starting the process to ban Big Money from presidential primaries.

Congrats to the DNC for starting the process to ban Big Money from presidential primaries.

Billionaire-funded super PACs like AIPAC & Crypto shouldn't be able to undermine democracy and determine Democratic candidates.

This principle should apply to congressional primaries too.

As stated by CNN

The chair of the Democratic National Committee, Ken Martin, plans to propose to party members by the end of this month a tool to reduce the influence of corporate and so-called dark money in the 2028 presidential primaries, joining a long-running intra-party debate on campaign finance rules.

Martin will introduce a resolution at the DNC’s August meeting, anticipating that the recently formed Reform Commission will explore options for removing corporate and dark money from the upcoming primary cycle.

Progressive leaders, including independent Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, have for years urged the DNC to ban super-PAC spending in Democratic primaries. Those demands intensified after fundraising by cryptocurrency groups and the lobbying organization AIPAC, which have become more active in the context of intra-party contests.

The draft resolution does not explicitly mention Super-PACs, and it is not yet clear whether it would cap their spending within party primaries. The document acknowledges that “the only long-term solution to this problem is legislative action by Congress, including a constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United in 2010,” which opened a new era of big money in American elections.

Sanders – a former Democratic presidential candidate – and seven Democratic senators in June wrote to Martin and the Senate’s minority leader asking to begin the process of developing mechanisms to ban Super-PAC spending in primaries.
