I can testify from experience that don't waste your time. It happens when it happens.
My own experience: My father was a malignant narcissist. I was the only one of the three children who returned home to look after him as he was 92 and our mother was predeceased. And he was a handful and still abusive.
You bet I had passing thoughts about his demise. But I didn't dwell on them.
Sunday night, I kissed him good night. Didn't see him at all on Monday. Tuesday at 6 p.m., I was having coffee at D&D when the town police called to notify me that he had been taken to the regional hospital.
I notified my siblings and rushed to the ER. The staff worked on him for 3 hours, but he was gone.
I found out later that his death was caused by his own hand. One week before, he rear-ended a van at a gas station, causing his breastbone to hit the steering column. (It was an old car w/o air bags.) He refused medical attention and hid from me and my siblings his accident. But because he didn't follow up with a doctor, he didn't realize that he had a partially dissected aorta, with a slow bleed into his chest for seven days. And on the day of his death, he had actually gone for a therapeutic massage, not realizing that his backache was a warning of an impending heart attack, which he later sustained. (The massage hastened the heart attack.)
And you bet I didn't see THIS coming . . . . .
So, my point is life and death are sort of like the theatrical device of deus ex machina, the proverbial hand of God coming out of the clouds and messing with the plot of the play. TSF will go when he goes and you won't see it coming.
Go get another cup of coffee or an icy cold bottle of beer. You'll know soon enough.

But over the last few months, it has occurred to me that, for all the hype about generative AI systems hallucinating, we pay much less attention to the fact that the current President does the same thing, nearly every day. The more you look at the way Donald Trump spews utter nonsense answers to questions, the more you begin to recognize a clear pattern he answers questions in a manner quite similar to early versions of ChatGPT. The facts dont matter, the language choices are a mess, but they are all designed to present a plausible-sounding answer to the question, based on no actual knowledge, nor any concern for whether or not the underlying facts are accurate.
snip
This is not the response of someone working from actual knowledge or policy understanding. Instead, its precisely how an LLM operates: taking a prompt (the question about job losses) and generating text based on some core parameters (the system prompt that requires deflecting blame and asserting greatness).
The hallmarks of AI generation are all here:
Confident assertions without factual backing
Meandering diversions that maintain loose semantic connection to the topic
Pattern-matching to previous responses (ripped off, billions of dollars)
Optimization for what sounds good rather than whats true
Great article and hard to summarize, because the author gives so many spot-on examples.

(2,374 posts)I also occasionally buy a lottery ticket when the amount is a life changing event. I buy it not expecting to win but for the nights filled with dreams of the help that I would be able to provide to family, friends and those in need. To me, that's worth a few bucks. And, I prolong hearing about the results as long as possible. It's my guilty pleasure.
So, waiting for the bad, horribly, devastating news just makes me giddy with anticipation. It will happen when it happens, I only wish for long bouts of pain and misery for his eventual final breath. Maybe a moment of clarity at the realization of his inept, failed existence and fear of the end.
I too had an abuser and that piece of dung is still in existence after 82 years but I will get no joy in his demise because I don't care.

Id prefer he goes to prison, but that has a lower probability of happening than the KFC finally taking him out. True Vance et al still exist, but they dont have the cult appeal.

(11,850 posts)Democrats need to step up and get much more rambunctious. The old political game is done. Unfortunately, we have to resort to the retaliatory tactics of Newsom. The low approval of democrats in polls included people like me that want them to get more aggressive instead of being Droopy Dog Merrick Garlands. I sure as fuck want MAGA dead and buried where people are ashamed of ever associating with it.
Bill Clinton noted that people do have a propensity of voting for strong and wrong over quiet and principled- not to say Dems are always principled - they do have billionaires to please as well. Authoritarian is always wrong. Always. There is no spectrum. It is black and white.

(11,850 posts)David Hogg deserved a bigger voice. Sure.
Bernie started it, but AOC and Mamdani seem like the path forward. They have the charisma which is key these days. I know youll drone on about communism or whatever the fuck, but I dont think they are proposing state control of everything. Your boy is with his INTC stake.
They want basic things to be affordable. You allow that to happen and things will be a lot better. Instead you vote in MAGA which has nobodys interests in mind who is worth less than $10B. At least you get to own the libs though, amirite?

(6,274 posts)Accidents with chest compression caused by the steering wheel are not uncommon. In nursing and RT they hone this point in emergency care. Many accident victims don't realize there is a problem until it's critical.
As for your father, you were not, I assume, eagerly anticipating his demise. I find the anticipation has a distinct frisson. It may be sad, but I will take my pleasure where I find it with this horror.

(32,869 posts)She made it to 95.
I did my best to make sure she had what she needed. So did my middle brother. She was hateful and abusive anyway. She should have been in a nursing home. Eventually, I got her powers of attorney, financial and medical. I got a guardian for her. She insisted on living at home, alone. She fell and broke her pelvis in four places. Then she landed in a nursing home. She was supposed to stay in bed unless she had assistance getting up. She didn't listen. She fell again and broke her hip. Then she died. Everyone who knew her said that her death did not happen soon enough.

He's too consumed with power to die.
He's been dying since 2015. So, I'm not expecting much.
Dick Cheney is still around. He had his first heart attack in 1978
He also didn't have a pulse for 15 months! He had some bypass thing implanted until he could get a new heart.
He also had numerous surgeries while he was VP.

(2,374 posts)Karma's real. It's like making yourself feel better by believing evil people will get what's coming to them. When evil people meet their demise at the hands of another, I think it's just the odds. Such as Whitey Bulger and Jeffery Dahmer. The life you choose to live likely ends in the manner you chose. Again, Sadam, Gaddafi, Mussolini. That's just the likelihood, in my opinion.
