This is dangerous stuff. People losing their jobs over criticizing Charlie Kirk and it must stop!
Would it be too hard to hold a press conference reiterating a the universal condemnation by Democrats of the murder of Kirk, yet explain we can't live in a society where there is free speech for one side, but not the other? You either have free speech for all or you don't.
When Trump, his kids, and many others on the right made fun of a near fatal attack on Paul Pelosi in his home, was anyone fired for it?

(17,834 posts)...to get off my butt and away from my keyboard to do something besides complaining in this safe space about the lack of leadership by the Democrats! If Democrats really show some leadership, i would be filled with righteous energy and would show up local city councils or school boards and complain like you see right wingers doing when they try to convince people to adopt their views.
However, I am not doing this. I just complain on liberal boards like this about the lack of leadership by Democratic elected officials. And you know whose fault is that? Democrats.

Common ground requires both parties to be amenable to the concept. MAGAts are the real-life equivalent of zombies. They will not be deterred from their psychotic obsession with the destruction of everything that once made this country great. The only common ground they can imagine is the blood-soaked ground they're standing on while they bury us.

And to be clear, criticizing Charlie Kirk or not feeling bad about it is one thing. But celebrating (and Ive seen lots of that on social media) is something altogether different. I have. I issue whatsoever if businesses dont want to be associated with people who cheer the murder of someone with whom they disagree.

(1,433 posts)THINK ABOUT THIS:
The UK citizens that hung the photos from buildings and projected the images on buildings during Trump's visit got charged with ****MALICIOUS COMMUNICATION********
It is actually a law in the UK................................enacted years and years ago for some unknown reason.................
Trump and the RepubliCONs will recognize this happening as a completely new and humongous attack on anyone or any group here in the U.S. saying anything bad about Trump or his entire CABAL..........
He can say:....... it is law in other countries, and we should declare Malicious Communications also as a law, in the U.S.
The Republican Senators and Republican House Members, as well as the U.S. Supreme Court will jump on it immediately......
They all would benefit immensely from this law..............
So, if protestors carry posters, they can be busted and charged, Internet locations can be shut down as Malicious Communications, any personal email by all of us, is a criminal offense, bad mouthing cops, ICE etc and can be charged with Malicious Communications etc etc etc.........
AND for all who say: "THEY CAN'T DO THAT".......How many times in the past 9 years have we said that, only to be proven wrong???????????????
OMG, this is far far worse than Citizens United.............

And with violence against anyone not RW is incited the way it is now, who would even want to put up a lawn sign that could end up getting you shot.

If theyre being fired for quoting Kirk is it because the things Kirk said were racist or bigoted and their bosses think these are their own opinions or because they were saying he was a shit person for holding those opinions?
A lot needs to be unpacked here.

2. Most of media ignores the press conference or the part where the elected official remarked on the subject.
3. Democrats post that Democratic officials need to hold press conference on subject.

(12,409 posts)Nich Fuentes is out and about criticizing pedo Trump's response to Charlie Kirk's shooting. He thinks there should be continual in depth updates on everything about the shooting. He criticized pedo Trump for not going to the memorial service. He criticized pedo Trump for talking about his turning the white house into a trashy bordello when asked how he felt about the death.
So, there is some amount of eating their own going on. Fuentes has a little army he sends out to harass people including other Nazis he doesn't like.
Turns out he even has shooters who go out after people he doesn't like hence the Charlie Kirk death. So, why aren't they going after Nich Fuentes' group? They are the ones who radicalized and supported Kirk's shooter. The right wing better watch out they created another monster.

The First Amendment states that the government can't punish you for what you say unless your speech falls foul of very narrow limits. That's it. It says absolutely nothing about private companies.
Nowhere is it written that your employer can't fire you if you say or do something they dislike or that they feel casts them in a light they don't appreciate. As an example, racist speech is protected under the First Amendment and yet many people have lost their jobs because they engaged in it. Companies dislike being associated with controversy because they want to make money. It's pretty simple.
As a practical matter, though, I would disagree with someone being fired for criticizing Kirk or his views. If they openly celebrated his death, though, then oh well. That's just gross and I have zero sympathy for them. There's a big difference between disagreeing with someone and being glad they were murdered.

(34,013 posts)If they said things on SM that indicates that they support gun violence, I can understand. Esp violence at schools. But if they're just being critical of Charlie Kirk, then it's a violation of their first amendment.
Additionally, when are they posting this stuff? Are they posting during work hours or after hours?
If a teacher posts stuff about Charlie Kirk during work hours, the post is considered political, then in Texas, they can be reprimanded, because they are using government resources for "political activity". This standard however, is not enforced fairly. However, in this case the TEA sent letters to districts, which is political in an of itself, because usually they don't send letters. They are telling districts to check the SM of their employees specifically for Charlie Kirk posts. So, the standard is not being enforced fairly. They certainly didn't send letters after George Floyd. They didn't send letters after Jan 6th. If teachers are just posting their opinion about Kirk after hours, such as "good riddance", "he was a bigot" or quoting Kirk about shooting deaths, it is basically free speech unless they are supporting the gun violence, then it's censorship.
Gift link. (Sometimes people are put on leave until the situation cools down, which with this fire department, which is about 40 miles from San Antonio and is in our media market, I can understand. I think it's biased in this case because this rural fire dept probably wouldn't do anything if the person posted something negative about George Floyd, but then the public up in Canyon Lake is extremely red and wouldn't care)
Other parts of the state seem to be engaged in more harsher punishment. However, specific details are not provided because they are not in our media market.
The Texas Education Agency said it is reviewing at least 180 complaints of public school teachers and staff posting negative comments about Kirk's death. A Baylor University graduate student was removed from an intern position at a Waco-area school district over comments made online, and near Houston, Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District said it is working to terminate a teachers contract after a Facebook post that drew criticism.
Gov. Greg Abbott praised the expulsion of a Texas Tech student, writing on X, Definitely picked the wrong school to taunt the death of Charlie Kirk, and called for the expulsion of a Texas State University student who was filmed mocking Kirks death. Texas State announced Tuesday that the individual is no longer a student" at Texas State.

What did the student at Texas Tech post? If they posted that they were planning to engage in similar activity as the shooter, then I can understand. However, if they were just saying, "He died doing what he endorsed", then it's free speech.

Then if we find out someone has a free afternoon and casually allowing the Republicans to destroy America, we can all angrily nag them with strongly worded phone calls. We should know if they spend too much time in the restroom, too. This is no time for constipation or overactive bladders. They can just hold it during the magic press conferences that everybody will listen to and become mesmerized, crying out, "Ah! The Democrats are right! I was wrong! (12,412 posts)"Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) says his fellow Democrats have gone too far in demonizing their political opponents and called on both sides to come together in the wake of the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Absolutely, Durbin said on CNN News Central, when asked whether he thinks Democrats and not just Republicans have gone too far in some of their rhetoric and in demonizing the other side.
"I mean, this notion that were going to characterize MAGA as Nazis, for example, Durbin continued, offering an illustration of rhetoric from his own party. On the other side, that the Republicans would characterize the Democrats as a party of murder or evil. The outrage coming from both sides is unacceptable in both instances, he added. So, yes, both sides can learn a lesson here. And the loss of Mr. Kirk is a good reason to do it.
"Durbin, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate, said its important to come together to condemn political violence. He said public officials from both parties casting blame on their political opponents are flat-out wrong."

(204 posts)We are on our own.
It is only a matter of time before basic rights are taken away from us.
There is nothing hidden, and no one is coming to help us. Remember, they now have access to everything and people in place to execute any order they are given. And if a lower court agrees with whatever situation is brought up to them, the Supreme Court will surely overturn it.
Things that I thought were impossible, that there would be safeguards in place to stop, are becoming the norm. Im actually getting to the point that I dont want to post anymore for fear of being targeted. Just like the teachers that said something and Stephen Colbert, and now Jimmy Kimmel. And the latter two have massive amounts of wealth to deal with the inconvenience of losing a job. The rest of us will not be as lucky.
And we have no one fighting for us. Not even to develop a narrative and proclaim it far and wide. Nothing.
We need a plan and a leader.

I know where they can be found, but I'm sick of posting them for people who bash pols who've ALREADY run and won against actual republicans, insisting instead that something they thought up is the most important and winning thing in the world, and proceed to trash the post advocating for our own Democratic leaders.
Yet they NEVER seem to promote ANYTHING our leaders say and do on their own volition.
This kind of complaint from the critics that suggests Dems have said and done nothing at all is as absurd as it's self-defeatingly false.
The worst is the insinuation that complaining like this in public forums is some sort of political genius.
