AI companies can ensure safety by solving the alignment problem...which is going to be extraordinarily difficult. Unfortunately, most of these companies only pay lip service to keeping a lid on their creations. It's more important for them to be first in advancements and stock price.

It is becoming increasingly likely the first clue that a superintelligent AI is actively working against our existential interests will also be the last.

It can't advance the entire species when it dumbs down users and harms the environment.

And if the unethical companies and governments racing to see who can develop a superintelligent AI ever manage to do so, it will be virtually guaranteed NOT to be aligned with humanity's existential interests. Because none of those companies and governments really are.
