Meditating in a group fosters a sense of community that can enhance emotional well-being. Sharing this intimate experience with others can strengthen social bonds and provide emotional support. Participants often report feeling more connected to others in the group, which can alleviate feelings of isolation and loneliness.

(34,402 posts)The eye of a hurricane move over my head, although the eye was a brief respite, I can tell you it's all terrifying. I think about the pain of the past.
I imagine before the world had its current understanding of the phenomenon, uncivilized populations believed things were fine for a few moments only to be hit with the devastation again.

(4,087 posts)Jamaicans are battened down. My SIL just had 3.5 ft in house in St. Petersburg last year.
We've lucked out with weather patterns this year and hoped populations would avoid the crunch.
Hoping it does not get too bad.

(42,458 posts)I've been saying some prayers for Malaise and her family.
Jamaica and the other islands have been through so much in the past several years. There doesn't seem to be any justice in this.

(5,437 posts)We should call upon them, as seems appropriate, with sincerity and love.
Yemaya to spread her arms and lend her protection, Oya to cast her fury into the waters and spare the islands, Olokun to accept that fury into the depths of his waters, with least harm to all.
May Jamaica and other islands be protected as we spread our arms to help hold them safe. Visualizing Malaise and her people emerging safe and strong. Holding that pattern...

(5,437 posts)based in West African, Nigerian, Yoruban traditions. (It has something to do with a style of divination, too. Right?) I was thinking specifically of Afro-Caribbean Yoruba-based traditions, such as Santeria (Afro-Cuban). Candomblé has Orishas, too, but it's Brazillian. In the Caribbean, there's also Haitian Vodou, but it has Loa (like Papa Legba) instead of Orishas. And of course there are probably other traditions that I am unaware of.
I am not a practitioner of any of these traditions, but I have known practitioners. I have studied these traditions both as personal interest and academically as world religions, so it came into my thoughts that it might be appropriate to appeal to the Orishas since they are part of the Afro-Caribbean traditions, and was hoping someone here might have more of a personal connection than myself. (Could that be you?) I know they like offerings (these don't have to be sacrifices, just food, etc.)... Whatever helps?

(20,827 posts)I was in New Orleans 2 months after Katrina and even then the devastation was overwhelming.
I hope Jamaica is spared the brunt of the storm. It takes so long to recover, especially on an island.
Very positive vibes are heading you way, Malais, along with everyone else on your beautiful island. ❤️

(1,406 posts)Last year, under mandatory evacuation in SW Florida, I too scurried to escape Milton along with my two precious pups and kitty who were scared to death. We headed for Alabama, which was closest pet-friendly hotel.
A freak car wreck on interstate put me in Dothan hospital for a solid week, nearly died, treated for physical and emotional trauma, losing mobility for months. As usual, zero family support.
So, Im extra worried about malaise, and praying with all my might that she is safe, sound, and comes out on the other side with all the love, support, comfort and help of others, including our awesome and loving DU family.
Sending good energy and vibes to everyone in the path of Melissa.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
