(6,101 posts)while wholly ignoring Archer Daniels Midland (in the past ten years, fined nearly $52 million for over 85 violations of federal and state laws). I tend to think it's because we gave up on the War on Poverty and decided a War Against the Impoverished is much more palatable to the entitled and comfortable.
They have to blame someone, so go after those least able to fight back.
I remember being a dirt poor single mom and I tried to find some small treat that would give us something to look forward to. It wasn't extravagant or excessive, just a little perk so for a few moments we didn't feel quite so deprived. Meanwhile, the groceries from food stamps never lasted a whole month.

(77,748 posts)He has received about $12 billion in state and federal funds.
No one threatens the wrath of god on him for spending this amount of money on
a wedding.
But a single mom buys some chips and candy for the kids and all hell breaks loose.

(51,444 posts)They are part of an exclusive class; essentially they are America's aristocracy or royalty. Apparently such people are always with us and like monarchs of old, they suck all the life out of lesser human beings that they look down upon as mere peasants and slave labor.
They honestly believe they are superior beings.

(7,287 posts)Like millions spent in Mexico running pro Trump ads, 300 million ballrooms, gold and marble plated shitteries, Gatsby balls, personal flights on the taxpayer's dime, and paid House Republicans sitting on their arses doing nothing unless they're allowed to screw the average American enough to their liking.
Food assistance, affordable healthcare, etc. Fk that. Let's add another layer of gold to the crown molding.

(1,752 posts)The carts certainly contained many items which I would call junk or severely over processed foods. There were also items that would clearly not be paid for by SNAP. While the reporter never said explicitly that these carts belonged to people purchasing food with their SNAP benefits, it clearly seemed to me that they were implying that this is how SNAP beneficiaries spend our tax money. I don't think it was just careless editing. I found the whole story to be reprehensible.

(1,819 posts)If these folks dont want their kids eating hamburger helper, chips, soda, whatever - then dont buy it.
Dont you dare shame people about whats in their grocery carts.
Our Christian food pantry is in desperate need of
Canned Soup
Cereal
Jelly
Meat Helpers
Pasta Meals
Peanut Butter
Spaghetti Sauce
So Mrs Church Lady put it in your pipe and smoke it.
Theres nothing wrong with these food items because they provide badly needed CALORIES to folks who dont get enough to eat.
Poor people dont eat keto or organic food. They eat whatever that $20.00 bill will buy this week to feed their families. Ill tell ya lots of them are very creative and can stretch a dollar in amazing ways I never thought about.
So Mrs Church Lady watch some YouTube videos on extreme budget meals.
Or better yet
15 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, This is a remote place, and its already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.
16 Jesus replied, They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.
17 We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish, they answered.
18 Bring them here to me, he said. 19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.

But more importantly, at least to me, we live in one of the wealthiest countries in the world. The very idea that human beings go to bed hungry in this nation while other people attend a billionaires Great Gatsby ball on Halloween disgusts me.
I paid for my groceries today, too. I also donated food to my local food bank this week. I am eternally grateful to be able to do this because there was a time when my husband and I passed around 69 cents among four other friends to eat pinto beans for supper.
I understand what being hungry feels like. I understand what too much month and not enough pay check means. We were blessed to have kin who were generous with produce from their gardens.
Can we do any less for our suffering brothers and sisters?

(734 posts)that woman had as if she was checking for what she could put aside.....here we don't see that because here if you are on what we call income assistance aka welfare there is no way of knowing because instead of stamps or whatever they were called you get money in to your bank account...that takes care of being embarassed at the check out.

(114,183 posts)but the majority of kids here in NM start to get lactose intolerant around the age of 3. Whaddya gonna feed 'em, whiskey?
Other than stuff their kids can drink without being doubled over in pain, SNAP carts around here look really straightforward with cheap cuts of meat, mainly pork, beans, rice, and an assortment of things to go along with those. Fresh fruit and vegetables are mostly missing, too expensive because they're not subsidized at the farm level like meats and grains are. That makes them too expensive.

(21,150 posts)...just so somebody, somewhere, show how, some way, doesn't get something THEY don't think those people deserve. Honestly, I don't give a shit if a few people game the system as long as people don't go hungry or homeless. It's a matter of pragmatism coupled with morals. Repukes don't do either.

(16,428 posts)They came in a booklet, making it clearly obvious that the purchaser was "on welfare", and some folks took that as an invitation to berate the user. I was one of those who relied on food stamps; on one memorable occasion the man in line behind me noticed that I'd purchased a small pizza and he took loud exception to how I was squandering HIS money. I didn't bother responding, having learned it would do no good. Not that it matters, the pizza was a small thank you to the neighbor who routinely helped with small chores; his stamps usually ran out after a couple of weeks.
I still rely on SNAP, it doesn't last very long; and I've had my groceries delivered since covid, so I don't get glowered at by other shoppers. That said, I have zero tolerance for anyone who loudly opines about how the poor are making the rich miserable. Feisty old ladies have a lifetime of words and nothing to lose by glaring at idiots.

(1,230 posts)(Women and Infant Children) were issued coupons for the nutritional needs of Mothers and Infant Children. The paperwork process at the cashier was so onerous and time-consuming that customers were forced to wait as each item was accounted-for on the forms while customers in line behind were forced to wait or find another cashier line. This was implemented to bring derision upon the users of the program. It doesn't cost anything to be mean. I'm pretty sure Jesus wept.

(7,396 posts)we are all prone to the 'entitlement' syndrome.
Bezos is entitled, so no criticism.
Mom shopping on a limited budget - not entitled, so open to criticism.
Clear case here in Australia years ago:
Aboriginal recipients of government support. Like a SNAP system, but the furore was about them possibly buying alcohol with that!
'Loophole' was closed down quickly.
Hard life if society deems you as not being entitled, party on for those who are in the elite entitled class.

(16,096 posts)I am certainly not antinatalist, but I am opposed to pronatalism whether its in the Global North or the South. I think we should take care of all the people from the elderly/disabled to babies and children already on earth over Cornucopian callousness that treats people as disposable. Most pronatalism is not sourced to any concern for womens rights or liking of kids. Its about accelerating chaos and borrowing the reproductive strategies you see in the wild which are not a good fit obviously for humans.
It strikes me that these guys think exactly opposite to that. More babies yes..how they are taken care of..fuck that. They seem to be going for the animal model of survival. Thats completely uncivilized.
The fallacy Cato etc have cunningly created in the public mind is coupling acknowledgment of the limits to the growth with these cruel and fascistic policies against the poor.
