Trump Orders Air Chaos Across America in Shutdown Tantrum

The Trump administration is throttling flights as the government shutdown continues to stretch air traffic controllers thin.

The Federal Aviation Administration announced Wednesday that it would reduce air traffic by 10 percent across 40 “high traffic” markets starting Friday morning to ensure the safety of air travelers amid the longest shutdown in U.S. history.

The restrictions will stay in place until the data shows that things are moving “in the right direction,” Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said in a press conference.

FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said the list of affected airports will be released on Thursday after officials meet with airlines to discuss implementation.

Be pretty difficult to shit down major airport in red cities.....since they don't have any.

Most of those cities are just part of larger metro with impacted airports.

Mesa, Aurora, arlington....

Anchorage is one of the impacted airports

If they were picking airports for political retribution Florida and Texas wouldn't be on the list.

Will Rogers International Airport in red Oklahoma City is the largest airport in the state and a major airport for the region, with 4.6 million passengers going into it in 2024.  It serves as a hub for several airlines, including Southwest, American, Delta, and United. And it's not on the shut down list.

Will Rodgers, or any of the others you listed below, are not major airports.

Besides that, slowing down traffic to these will also slow down traffic to every other airport because they all fly to them.

Will Rogers/OKC in Oklahoma City has many more passengers than many of the medium hubs listed on your wikipedia page, like blue San Diego, which was part of the shut down order.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_the_busiest_airports_in_the_United_States

And I'm personally affected by San Diego because my son has to fly out of there in a few weeks to come to me, and now that is up in the air.

But you're right about one thing. These blue airport shut downs will affect all the airports, whether Trump wants it to or not, because passengers from these medium hubs do fly to all major hubs, and to other medium hubs like OKC not part of the shut down order.

They are enplanements. Those are passengers that board a plane there. The passenger columns for major airports are over 20 million yearly. These airports are doing 4 or 5 or more times the amount Will Rodgers is doing. The ones on the list that dont have high passenger columns are some of the busiest cargo airports like Louisville (Fed Ex) and Anchorage.

I understand your frustration but I really dont think they are targeting blue cities as much as throttling traffic at the busiest airports.

When I pointed out to you that there are red cities,
you moved the goal posts to "major airports." It is evident that only blue cities, with or without "major airports" (like small San Diego Airport), were included in the FAA shut down order. Yet you continue to dismiss that there was any partisan motivation on the Trump administration’s part, when literally everything they do is partisan.

BTW, Louisville has a Democratic mayor, and Anchorage's mayor had the endorsement of the Democratic Party when she ran as an Independent against her Republican opponent. Oklahoma City has a Republican mayor, and it's airport was not included, even though it is over four times busier than San Diego, in terms passengers or "enplanements." It makes no sense other than political retribution.

Which is what you conflating. You are using OKCs passenger volume and comparing it to other airport enplanements. Thats comparing rougly double OKCs actial number againt half of the ither actual number. The airports on the list are handling tens of millions of passengers per year.l, and in many cases much higher.

And all you did was take a rhetorical statement and try to prove it wrong.

The point is that if you are going to slow down air traffic because of shortages of controllers, its going to hit blue city airports the hardest because those are the bussiest airports.

Thu Nov 6, 2025, 09:08 PM
Nov 2025

you know, logic....behind the slow down. How many air traffic controllers are calling out? 10%? How many are left? How many flights can each tower handle versus what they are expected to handle?

I don't think it was a great situation before....short staffed by all reports.....and it's bound to be FAR worse.

Anyway.....if your justification is 'safety' you should have numbers for us......because it has to be based on numbers, right?
