Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsHi, everybody! I survived my pulmonary function test, but I don't know if I succeeded.
I won't really know until I get the official word from my doctor. And that might not happen for a day or two.
The tech was super nice: he was cheerful and explained everything that was going to happen, and what he wanted me to do as we went along.
Basically, lots of breathing with a clothespin on my nose and a nozzle in my mouth! A lot of deep breathing and then blowing it out. I was hooked to a computer which showed what my breathing looked like. Wow!
He indicated, but could not say, that I had succeeded in doing what my doctors want.
So, it's over. And now I need a nap!
And as you know, I will give a rec to each of your posts. You've helped me immeasurably, and I will never forget it.
See you all later . . .

(179,487 posts)I have COPD and have to a similar test every year in a glass box. In the middle of the test, I nebulize and they redo the test to see if the albuterol makes a difference.
I hope that your test turns out okay.

(31,300 posts)sounds kinda like a test I had a few years ago. I'd been sick with something respiratory and that test was so hard! I thought for sure I'd flunked it and they were going to prescribe an oxygen tank, but as it turned out I did much better than I thought. Hopefully the same is true for you.

(23,727 posts)I took that same test couple years back and he wouldn't tell me either how I did, asked him in different
ways and he finally told me I had nothing to worry about.

(491 posts)You are going to do so well and you are going to be well! I have been on this journey with my daughter for past 3 years. We try to maintain a lot of silly humor to balance out the fear. When my daughter came out of the OR following her cancer surgery in July, she had an incision from her sternum to her pubic bone, a port in her neck, 5 external drainage tubes, two internal stents in her kidneys, and was badly bruised. When she first saw the "damage", she was slightly disquieted and lamented, "What happened to me?" I told her that she had been in a bar fight. "First", I told her, "they beat you but despite all of those bruises, you wouldn't submit. Then, they stabbed you, but despite the extensive gash running down the front of your body , you refused to give up. So, finally, they shot you six times but even with six holes in you, you refused to go down". She laughed and asked, "Well, did I win the bar fight?" I told her, "Oh, honey, this is one fight you were and are determined to win. You are determined to win as well, California Peggy. Sending you lots of love and strong healing vibes. You have overwhelming support here on DU, and we're asking our spirit guides to lend their care as well. Oh, and if you need any highly imaginative stories for injuries, wounds, or scars, please do contact me. I come with recommendations from family and friends whose reputations were enhanced by my medical mythologies. Break your ankle playing backyard badminton by stepping in a gopher hole? Dull! I'll have you jumping from a helicopter straight onto the ski slope in New Zealand and THEN completing your run before you headed to the hospital. 😋

(430 posts)..is if you were standing, talking and they let you go, you're on track to live awhile longer. I had a friend to took the test and they didn't let him go. They wheeled him into surgery right after that. 18 years later, he's still good!
