TRUTH!
Robert Reich
@rbreich.bsky.social
This is how our government has been corrupted:
1) Donors give huge sums to elect politicians to office
2) Elected officials rewrite rules in the donors' favor
3) Donors make huge profit
4) Repeat
We must get big money out of politics.
It is the root of our dysfunction.

(6,237 posts)I would add:
Donors repay elected officials by other means such as paying off ginned up lawsuits w/o contesting them e.g. sue them for slander or other sorts of damages and await payment.

"We must get big money out of politics. It is the root of our dysfunction."
It's not brilliant new idea from Robert Reich. Anyone who has been paying attention or cared or wasn't benefiting from the money has been screaming this ad naseim. But if him saying it somehow brings more attention or support, great.

(2,786 posts)Just so frustrating that people are more interested in voting for the guy who hates who they hate rather than against the guys whose are robbing them blind.

Citizens United must be abolished.
Things ran pretty good back then.
Our democracy was never intended to make ones self a millionaire. And grifting was NEVER heard of. NOR allowed. It was frowned upon and never attempted until the corrupt people took charge and changed everything. All in their favor.
What needs to be done? Win elections. Get control. Get rid of Citizens United. Allowing the mess we currently have must be stopped.
It all starts in 26.

(3,136 posts)Yes - it would have to likely come in the form of a law, signed by the President. There would be lawsuits, and eventually it'd be heard before the Supreme Court. Depending on the wording and scope of the law, it might get struck down.
The Congress can constrain the jurisdiction of the courts, I think, by act of law. It has been a long time since i've taken con law.

People have been paying off government officials for favorable legislation practically since the country began. Government officials have been profiting from inside information, payoffs and kickbacks the entire time.
Thats the very nature of this system we live under. There are very, very few people of honor in that game.
All these current people are doing is what has always been done, theyre just doing it openly and shamelessly.
Our problems run much deeper than citizens united, the entire system is designed to do what its doing.

(37,475 posts)It was wonderful. It's about his last class before retiring as a professor at UC Berkeley.
If you haven't already, see it if you can. It records what an asset to this country he has been.
It displays his vast intellect, his prodigious sense of decency and his passion for it, his wit, and his courage.
He is a great man.

(17,198 posts)But thats probably mostly because too many Americans are either too busy to take the time to watch, listen to, or read his stuff (despite his communication being relatively short and very straightforward) or too damn stupid to recognize that they are being played by the Rs vast brainwash machine to actually listen to and think about his stuff.

Once it has evolved to the point of a demented malignant narcissist running things, you can't fix anything until you get rid of him.
