https://www.thestreet.com/retail/home-depot-lowes-rival-files-chapter-11-bankruptcy"While they have been a moving target, President Donald Trump's tariffs have raised the cost of building a new house.
"The new tariffs could increase builder costs anywhere from $7,500 to $10,000 per home," Rob Dietz, chief economist at the National Association of Home Builders told CNBC, citing estimates from U.S. homebuilders. Last year, the NAHB estimated that every $1,000 increase in the median price of a new home prices out roughly 106,000 potential buyers.
So far, the biggest impact has been felt in lumber prices, "which are expected to total about $4,900 per home on average, according to Leading Builders of America, the trade group representing most of the nations publicly traded homebuilders," the website shared.
While the United States does produce some lumber, about a third of all the wood purchased for homebuilding comes from Canada. Domestic lumber producers generally raise their prices to match import prices.
Rising lumber prices damage the entire home construction industry, and a lack of certainty adds complexity to the home-building process, Steve Martinez, president of Tradewinds General Contracting in Boise, Idaho, shared with the NAHB.
Our contracts are all fixed price meaning that from the time we bid a project to the time we start to the time we order the materials, prices could change drastically, Martinez explained. But we are trying to preorder as much material as we can.

(150 posts)Its written pretty badly.
Its American Home Supply. A rival of Home Depot and Lowes.
I thought Home Depot was going belly up because nobody wants to deal with ICE in their parking lots.
Thanks

(75,864 posts)Thus is not Home Depot or Lowes.
It's a small company that is a "rival" of those 2.
And when I say small, I mean small! HD has 30,000 times the revenue of North American Building Supply.
They're so small I doubt who the CEO supports politically has ever made the news.

(2,185 posts)Way down in the article we find out that the company declaring bankruptcy is a regional competitor to Home Depot and Lowes called North American builders Supply.

(20,124 posts)North American Builder's Supply, a Home Depot and Lowe's rival based in Illinois, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

(75,864 posts)The headline made it look like Home Depot, a rival of Lowes, was filing.
BTW: this is a $5 million company.
It's a shame that this happened but this is a quite small company.
I think it's unsurprising that a small business would take the beating from these silly tariffs.

(15,350 posts)Was preparing to celebrate but was dubious so I actually read the article. Though the info of the impact of the tariffs on new homes is useful if you choose to engage w numbskulls on SM blaming housing increases on libs this or that.

(2,839 posts)The company has remained open and plans to reorganize and continue its operations, according to data shared by RK Consultants on X, the former Twitter.
North American Builders Supply, Inc., a Yorkville, Illinois-based building materials supplier, filed for Chapter 11 protection on December 3, 2025, in the Northern District of Illinois. The company reported between $500,001 and $1 million in both estimated assets and liabilities, according to the consulting firm.
The filing lists numerous trade creditors and lines of credit among its largest unsecured claims. Major unsecured creditors include Bluetape, Inc. ($503,219), Kapitus Servicing, Inc. ($149,596), and an unsecured portion of a claim from Central Bank Illinois ($94,131).

(2,880 posts)HD and/or Lowes is NOT filing for bankruptcy - it was a misleading headline
Sympthsical
(10,860 posts)You have to go down to paragraph 7 just to find the name of the company the headline is referencing.
And to compound that, is a company with less than a million dollars in assets and liabilities and fewer than 50 employees really a "rival" to Home Depot and Lowe's? "Local company files bankruptcy in the face of Trump's tariffs" is a perfectly acceptable headline, guys!
I am all for conversations about the rising prices of materials and goods - absolutely.
But this "journalism" is not it.
I read that headline thinking, "Oh shit, is Ace Hardware going under or something?" Which I'm going to assume was the purpose.

(2,762 posts)They only have one retail location some where in Illinois. So they are really only a rival for at most one Home Depot and one Lowe's store
paleotn
(21,607 posts)The retailer in question is North American Builder's Supply. A regional like LaValley up here in New England. Their financial troubles are a pity since the regionals usually service underserved areas. Beyond that, they're an ankle biter compared to Depot and Lowes.
If our local Ace doesn't have something, I usually shop LaValley since they're closer, competitively priced, and service is second to none. Like our local Ace, the guys there know what the hell they're talking about. Depot is 45 minutes away. Lowes is 2 hours in either direction. That doesn't bother me one bit.
