(105,551 posts)in its home (and Irish Rugby is run by the Irish Rugby Football Union). These all co-exist with people using "football" for association football in those countries. No need to rename the NFL, and the use of just "football" in the USA for gridiron is going to continue whatever a government or official body says. It's just more verbal diarrhoea from an ailing narcissist.

(28,575 posts)..is actually played with the ball at one's feet. It has been calculated that the amount of time the ball is in play in an NFL broadcast is about 12 minutes, during which the ball is hardly ever at anyone's feet.
My husband, who played football in high school, and then lacrosse at the Air Force Academy, thinks it should be called passball -
(In the interest of transparency, I'm a long time soccer mom of 2 sons, now in their mid 30s and still playing. We follow English Premier League soccer/football, and are supporters of the Arsenal club. Also following Wrexham in the Championship league. Absolutely loved the Welcome to Wrexham series.)

(7,556 posts)in the early 1980s. Right after that the USFL was formed and at trump's urging, the USFL went from a Spring/Summer to a Fall Schedule. He owned the New Jersey Generals. Of course, the USFL went belly up.
Fun Fact: Don Shula was one of the very best coaches in the NFL in the 1970s-80s. He was contacted by trump about being head coach of the New Jersey Generals. His pay would be much, much better than what the Miami Dolphins were currently paying him. Shula was impressed and told trump he would get back with him after he talked with his attorney about this. That is as far as it went. He never took trumps offer. I can only imagine the attorney vetoed the deal. Possibly he had a reputation as a deadbeat boss even back then.

Five years later, hes still at it. NBC News reported:
If the NFL wants to improve its relationship with the current administration, theres a new way to do it.
Change the name of the sport.
President Trump, who got the royal treatment and them some from FIFA at Fridays World Cup draw, suggested that the world isnt big enough for two sports with the same name.
...But when you look at what has happened to football in the United States, its again soccer in the United States, the Republican said. We seem to never call it that because we have a little bit of a conflict with another thing thats called football. But when you think about it, shouldnt it really be called I mean, this is football, theres no question about it. We have to come up with another name for the NFL stuff. It really doesnt make sense when you think about it.

....Whats more, earlier this summer, Trump used his social media platform to argue that the Washington Commanders should return to their previous, offensive name, adding, I may put a restriction on them that if they dont change the name back. I wont make a deal for them to build a Stadium in Washington. (This is a stadium that the Republican wants to see named after himself.)
For her part, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem also recently said, in reference to league officials, They suck and well win and God will bless us.
