TX-SEN: Crockett set to launch Texas Senate bid, shaking up Democratic primary
Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett, a rising star within the Democratic Party, on Monday launched a bid for Sen. John Cornyns (R-Texas) hotly contested seat, according to multiple news outlets.
Crockett entered the primary field shortly before the candidate filing deadline passed on Monday afternoon, The Associated Press and other news outlets reported. She was among the candidates on an unofficial filing list provided by the Texas Democratic Party and is expected to formally enter the race Monday afternoon.
Her decision shakes up an already competitive primary that drew multiple well-known figures in the party. Former Rep. Colin Allred (D), who previously ran against Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) for his seat and was challenging Cornyn, dropped his bid earlier Monday, effectively clearing the way for a primary showdown between Crockett and another rising Democratic star, state Rep. James Talarico (D).
Crockett, who served as a national co-chair for former Vice President Harriss presidential campaign last year, had strongly hinted that she was considering a run for Senate earlier this year.
