We're stuck with this Administration until January 20th, 2029. So here's a simple poll, with only two bad choices. Despite that, this one is an easy choice for me.
So, what will it be? Trump until January 20th, 2029? Or resign and get Vance until January 20th, 2029 (assuming he loses reelection)?

He's also Thiel's puppet. Him being the President would usher in the worst. Not that we don't have that now.

(17,030 posts)He's a puppet and doesn't even know it. That alone makes him an idiot in my opinion. Would he, could he be dangerous? Most assuredly. But I think the MAGA worship would not pass so much from Trump to Vance.

(44,982 posts)I don't believe that we should expect Trump is going to last until the next election -- which might explain why he has been slapping his name on everything possible and is contemplating a law which could result in his current wife being deported.

(95,907 posts)Legally he cannot serve as president for more than 2 terms. Plus, JD will have to try and win that seat, he is not a given, it is called an election.
Um, welcome to DU.

(21,513 posts)If he resigns one day or less before the halfway mark, than Vance can only run for one term.

(5,030 posts)The US is past this point. The one third of us who are authoritarians and the one third who, up until recently, didnt really care as long as they got their hamberders and sportsball have gotten us into a situation from which there is no good answer.
But Trump is a liability to the Republican party, as well as the country and world. Trump energizes the Republican maga base, which is 80% of the party. But he also energizes Democratic voters to vote against him, and now, increasingly, it looks like the ignorant and apathetic third of non-voters are waking up and many will vote against him. Trump even divides the Republican leadership.
If Vance took power now he would probably lose some of the maga base, they wouldn't vote Democratic but would stay home. But the never Trumper Republicans would come back, and the apathetic and ignorant voters probably would go back to staying home.
It's like if you have neighbors that you dont get along with, and whom you have constantly told that their son is dangerous. When you see him setting fire to their garage do you call the fire department before any damage is done, or do you wait until the garage is in blazes. If you call immediately they will continue to ignore the problem. If you wait until severe damage is done the police will be involved and the neighbors will be forced to take action, hopefully before he burns your house down. Of course the best answer is to have moved before it got to that point.

(22,050 posts)Right now, Republicans are starting to escape their fear of Trumps mean tweets, and push back against some of his outrageous actions.
If Vance were to become president, my concern is republicans would shift to collaborating with him on various nefarious projects that, while not as outrageous as Trumps , would as bad if not worse for democracy.

(5,832 posts)We'd need at least 18 solid convictions, since none of these abysmal asskissing idiots are anywhere near qualified for the job, and many would be far worse than the current resident of 1600 Pennsylvania venue (and Merde-a-Loco):

1 Vice President JD Vance Republican
2 Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson Republican
3 President pro tempore of the Senate Chuck Grassley Republican
4 Secretary of State Marco Rubio Republican
5 Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent Republican
6 Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth Republican
7 Attorney General Pam Bondi Republican
8 Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum Republican

I don't think the Constitution covers anything past this bunch, since nobody in their right mind would have ever conceived of a criminal enterprise like the current mis-administration.

(105,568 posts)It changes from "how can we run US foreign policy to enrich the extended Trump family?" to "what can Vance do to manage to get elected in 2029?", which would probably mean less corruption, and more tacking towards the centre. Not that corruption and evil would stop altogether, of course, but they'd have to look like they cared about democracy.

(19,056 posts)maybe not until at least late October.
People have VERY short memories. We can't afford for them to forget this catastrophe before the 2026 general election.
We have to accept that we will need a massive effort to reverse the worst of the damage he has caused. And yes, it will only get worse over the next several months - although some R's pushing back in Congress give hope that some of the more serious stuff will slow down. (Renaming monuments, while grotesque, is relatively low consequence compared with killing off or hamstringing entire functions of the federal government).
But this is what a very large slice of America voted for. Even if they were too gullible or uninformed to realize it at the time.

(25,471 posts)Trump got away with dumping a pile of shit on Biden and then blaming Biden for that pile of shit. I want Trump to suffer his own legacy and not get to Calvin Coolige Vance or anyone else. This is Trump's pile of shit. He should get to roll around in it for four years.
