The sight of a cloud-covered sky signaling the threat of chilling rain has become a nightmare for thousands of displaced families in Gaza particularly those who have set up their tents along the beach, as the sea level rises due to heavy rainfall.
Families have been desperately trying to protect themselves from drowning by building sand barriers around their tents using shovels, reinforcing them with ropes, or covering them with tarps but many cannot afford these, as a single tarp can cost up to $30.
As the ceasefire in Gaza took effect in October 2025, many people in Gaza believed that our situation this winter would be better than the previous ones we have endured amid the genocide. But the reality is that conditions are becoming even worse, as Israel continues to restrict the entry of tents, tarps, blankets, and winter clothing into Gaza.
Many are still relying on the same worn-out tents they have used for more than two years some handmade from cloth or nylon which cannot withstand harsh winds or heavy rainfall. Water easily seeps inside, soaking the few clothes and blankets they own, leaving them exposed to the biting cold with nothing to protect them as they spend hours trying to dry their clothes and blankets.
According to United Nations estimates, 1.5 million people in Gaza are at risk from the cold and rain due to delays in the delivery of shelter materials, and around 74 percent of the tents currently in use are technically unfit for habitation because of wear and poor quality.

(13,227 posts)A report in the NYT this week was about the IDF killing six people and saying they saw something suspicious and opened fire, killing a baby and women. The IDF still have the license to kill at will, and to them any live Palestinian is suspicious, including babies. What special dispensation does Netanyahu have that allows him to commit genocide and to force people to live without adequate food and shelter? World leaders are just turning a blind eye even as Israel is illegally taking more and more of the West Bank. The IDF and settlers murder people there every day with impunity.
Trump announced his ceasefire with fanfare and then has done nothing to see that its implemented, as if his word was all that mattered. Totally empty plan.

Your empathy is underwhelming.

(1,529 posts)The day time temperatures in winter were in the 50s and 60s, but the night time temperatures dropped into the 40s.
If you're wet and cold, I can't imagine how you'd stay warm in a tent. Breaks my heart.

(37,360 posts)But rainfall often is accompanied by heavy surf, and some of the population set up camp on any flat ground available--and that included beaches.
Storm drains (to the extent they existed, if at all) are gone or buried and any low lying area will be flooded in heavy rain. A flat patch in a low area is just as amenable to setting up camp but not a good choice (in hindsight) when the rainy season hits. And the rainy season starts in October and builds for a while--it's why shepherds would be cray-cray to be staying with their sheep out to pasture in November, much less December. (Ahem.)
