WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) President Donald Trump on Sunday announced he is appointing Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry to serve as the U.S. special envoy to Greenland, the vast, semi-autonomous territory of Denmark that Trump has said the U.S. needs to take over.
Jeff understands how essential Greenland is to our National Security, and will strongly advance our Countrys Interests for the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Allies, and indeed, the World, Trump said in announcing the appointment.
Trump has said that Greenland is crucial for U.S. security and hasnt ruled out taking the island by military force, even though Denmark is a NATO ally of the U.S.
Its an honor to serve you in this volunteer position to make Greenland a part of the U.S., Landry wrote in a posting on X in which he thanked Trump for the appointment. He added, This in no way affects my position as Governor of Louisiana!

Denmark and Greenland vow that the US wont take over Greenland after Trump appoints envoy

The leaders of Denmark and Greenland insisted Monday that the U.S. wont take over Greenland and demanded respect for their territorial integrity after President Donald Trump announced the appointment of a special envoy to Greenland.
Trumps announcement on Sunday that Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry would be the U.S. special envoy prompted a new flare-up of tensions over Washingtons interest in the vast, semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, a NATO ally. Denmarks foreign minister said in comments to Danish broadcasters that he plans to summon the U.S. ambassador.
We have said it before. Now, we say it again. National borders and the sovereignty of states are rooted in international law, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and her Greenlandic counterpart, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, said in a joint statement. They are fundamental principles. You cannot annex another country. Not even with an argument about international security.
Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders and the U.S. shall not take over Greenland, they added in the statement, emailed by Frederiksens office. We expect respect for our joint territorial integrity.

That might get "awkward." I wonder how the US military would respond to such an order?
I will say that if the USA attacks Greenland, that would finally justify changing the Department of Defense to the Department of War.

(1,750 posts)This is at least the third cycle of his interest in Greenland. He brings it up, makes noise, then forgets, only to bring it up again a few weeks later like it's a new thing. Other examples: Russia/Ukraine Peace deal, Tariffs, etc.
He's weaving all over the road like he's swilled an entire bottle of Bacardi.

Just another manifestation of his insatiable and (literally, to him) maddening need to surpass and "brand."
Rest assured, he is thinking in terms of "Trump's Greenland."
The only time he backed down from besting was in Butler, PA, when he TACOed out of actually being assassinated by play-acting. The re-naming of the Kennedy Center, with his name above JFK's, is his way of coping.

Why does Trump want Greenland? âNational security.â

President Donald Trump named Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry on Sunday as his special envoy to Greenland, drawing renewed criticism from Denmark and Greenland over Washingtons interest in the mineral-rich Arctic island. [ ]
Landry, in a post on X, thanked Trump: Its an honor to serve in this volunteer position to make Greenland a part of the U.S. This in no way affects my position as Governor of Louisiana!
Late last year, when Trump was still in his post-election transition period, he announced plans to try to annex Greenland for reasons he struggled to explain. In the weeks and months that followed, the Republican suggested he was quite serious about his imperialistic ambitions in March, he refused to take the possible use of force off the table and as 2025 comes to an end, the president has tapped Landry as a special envoy because, as he put it, the governor understands how essential Greenland is to our National Security.
Everything about this story remains quite odd, in part because the White House continues to infuriate Denmark, a longtime NATO ally, and in part because Greenland clearly has no interest in becoming part of the United States.....
Indeed, despite the fact that special envoys have tended to be used for areas facing international crises, Trump tapped others for envoy roles, leading to inevitable diplomatic confusion about who, exactly, speaks on behalf of the administration.
With the addition of Landry to the diplomatic team, the problem is suddenly worse for reasons the White House has yet to explain
