CBS - "Sorry, we can't do a story on Auschwitz. We haven't gotten the Nazi side of things yet"

That's where CBS is today.

If a million people a minute don't fucking dump their Paramount subscriptions...a million people a minute are complicit.

"But I'll miss Survivor...."

Humanity is broken.

There is almost no watchable entertainment coming from the original 3 networks, other than the late-night comics and sports programming. I admire the work of Kimmel and Colbert, but in general, the late night format has been losing share steadily over 20 years.

Sports programming, particularly NFL and the Olympics, (and to a lesser degree, the NBA) is what keeps the network doors open at this point. Advertisers value the sports programming because it is mostly watched in real time, making it more likely the ads will be seen. But even the sports programming model is showing big danger signs. The younger generations aren't as addicted to cars, and they aren't as addicted to TV sets. They are much less likely to sit in front of a TV for two solid hours.

People are turning elsewhere for their information and entertainment. There is actually a thought process behind CBS' moves. They see they are in a death spiral trying to appeal to the traditional average family audience. So they are trying to at least solidify a niche. The problem is, the world doesn't need that niche. RWers already have Fox, Newsmax, and 1000 Russian bots to feed their eyeballs and earballs. They don't need CBS.

The strength of the original 3 networks has been their collection of local stations. But those are independently owned. It will be increasingly difficult for the 3 original networks to maintain these systems

CBS could be out to shut down the news division. Maybe save 60 Minutes as a propganda tool. I think it still gets a decent audience. Not sure how affiliates would feel about that. CBS Mornings and Evening News ratings have been in the crapper FOREVER. Not sure how CBS Sunday Morning and Face the Nation do.

From my own perspective...there is only ONE program across all four networks (other than sports and live award shows) that I tune in for for network broadcast. And the other two programs I watch next day on streaming commercial free. That's it--across an entire year, just three programs, all of which are reality competition shows. Scripted anything? Zero. NADA from CBS, ABC, NBC, or FOX. anything like that I'm watching on a streaming platform with content exclusive to streaming.

At least not immediately. Without that, they have very little to offer their local stations.

Instead, they will just keep making it more and more vacuous. Empty calories.

They are still strong, but the younger generations just aren't into it as much as earlier generations. The NFL got a big boost by embracing gambling and fantasy leagues. But that is a one-time boost. All media are evolving rapidly now. I feel like an absolute dinosaur because I still pay for cable. Other than the local stations (which I could get with an HD antenna), there is almost nothing I watch now. Anything I might have watched has been moved to an extra charge package, but my package still costs as much as ever. I need to cancel this. That should be my NY resolution.

Watch things the next day on youtube where possible. (Of course, even those are now slipping in ads...like Amazon Prime used to be commercial free...with yourincreasing price subscription! Too bad suckers)

Put up an outside antenna and get the major channels "free."
Look into VPNs and independent subscriptions. Of course, that's more often too much trouble for people to do. And heaven forbid, they might have to LEARN HOW to do something other than click a switch! Kid's today aren't the only stupid ones!

There really are other programs people haven't been brainwashed into watching online (internet) that are good.
America has turned into "soap opera" viewers where the big corporations are telling you what to watch for more and more profit for them. $200 plus per month to watch one thing at a time when average viewing time is 3 to 4 hours per day (except for the "babysitting" fact to ignore your kids so YOU can do other things. Do the math because the corporations don't want you to learn how much of YOUR money is going to them and their sponsors.

Soap operas started this in the 50s. Sports takes it to another level today. 3 hours of banter and commercials for a football game that takes ONE HOUR to play. That's beyond dumb!

But Americans are "Entitled" and have been conditioned and literally brainwashed that they HAVE to watch something they've been told they must watch.

By the way, Cable TV used to be commercial free back in the Stone Age until the government was wedded with big business.
You're paying for a subscription AND still paying extra by watching increasing commercials and commercial time! DUH!)

You're paying for "57 Channels" (and there's nothing on...Thanks, Bruce) and complaining...but still paying and watching...less. Only in America.

But of course, it's your right to pay for what you want, not get your money's worth and think it's ok to simply complain and it'll get better anyway.

A long time ago from a land far away, a man told me that Americans are the stupidest people on earth. I didn't believe him...then.

tells me how they would run a story on Auschwitz, if they were unable to get a quote from Goebbels, because that is exactly what Weiss is saying.

So, come on CBS. Suppose you had an indepepth, investigative report about what was happening at Auschwitz, but the Hitler regime failed to respond to you for "comment". Would you cover up that Nazi atrocity?

a clarification.

After the concern yesterday about what turned out to be a fake quote that many thought was real, it would be best to frame it more clearly. Maybe like this:

CBS, if they were doing a story on Auschwitz: "Sorry, we haven't gotten the Nazi side of things yet."

Works even better than what you have in the OP, and with no risk of confusion.

And no one feeling that posting fake quotes is okay for some DUers but not for others.

I knew you were just being sarcastic/satirical. But with such strange real quotes these days - and we've all seen real quotes that are hard to believe - it helps to be clear about what's real and what isn't.

CBS said that fake quote.

Satire and sarcasm work best when it's obvious that's what you're doing.

If you argue that the fake quote in your OP is "exactly" what Weiss said, as you did just now replying to me, you undermine the point you're trying to get across.

I'm glad you at least didn't claim in the OP that your fake quote was "exactly what Weiss is saying" because that's simply factually wrong.

I can't stand Weiss. But if you're going to put words in someone's mouth, to make a point, you should still make it clear it isn't a real quote. Otherwise you're making a straw man argument against something they didn't say.

It's better to simply go after Weiss for what she has said. And for apparently letting the Trump regime simply kill stories by not responding.

We hear much more about how people are tired of hearing about the Holocaust then any concern about current genocides.

It leads one to infer two things, first is that concern about any current genocides is extremely selective based on the fact that there is only one that gets discussion. The second I will differ to the words of Rod Serling:

There is an answer to the doctor's question. All the Dachaus must remain standing. The Dachaus, the Belsens, the Buchenwalds, the Auschwitzes; all of them. They must remain standing because they are a monument to a moment in time when some men decided to turn the Earth into a graveyard. Into it they shoveled all of their reason, their logic, their knowledge, but worst of all, their conscience. And the moment we forget this, the moment we cease to be haunted by its remembrance, then we become the gravediggers. Something to dwell on and to remember, not only in the Twilight Zone but wherever men walk God's Earth.

that goes not only for us "common people" but also people like Rod Serling and Gene Roddenberry. Both of whom tried to call attention, yet still get past the censors, to all kinds of evil done here on Earth by Man.

As popular as both men were with their shows, it's a shame that what they were trying to teach never taught one man to act in accordance. The one about the aliens on a suburban neighborhood hit me hard. And I can still almost quote it to this day, some many decades later. Why didn't it hit others in the same way?
