Remember serious shows like Dick Cavett and Phil Donahue? I guess all that intellectual stuff just couldn’t draw viewers like Oprah’s, “Oh, look what fad I’m heavily into *this* week!” brand of hucksterism. *eyeroll*

In many ways, I blame her for where we are today.

65. Shirley MacLane and Oprah replaced Ralph Nader and Donahue
Thu Dec 25, 2025, 06:51 PM

Television needed to compete against subscription cable with their advertising model.A television in one house changed to a television in every room and each had a separate viewer with separate advertising. This expanded advertising to different markets and revenue that saved the advertising based broadcast product.

Women control household spending and purchase decisions so advertising to them made more sense than Nader and Donahue who were bashing corporate consumerism.Oprah and MacLane have instant recognition for instant engagement.Donahue had to develop the topic and hope the viewer remained through the next break.

Advertising changed television to suit itself and networks let public service go extinct in order to survive against subscription cable. PBS could replace some of what was lost but government subsidy and viewer donations were like a small subscriber base.Donahue was on PBS and long form news that develops engagement and did not have instant engagement shock news.

UNESCO and did a lot of work in Africa. She recounted when Oprah opened a school there and was showing up, maybe for the opening, or just after, I forget (has been a long time.). Anyway, everyone was waiting for her and when she finally arrived, many hours later, it was with a huge entourage, she was wearing high heels, plenty of cameras, played the privileged queen - very tone deaf to where she was, those around her, etc. My sister said she was appalling oblivious to how she had kept people waiting all day, no apology, disrespectful …

… and a favourite joke amongst us was this one:

Q: What do you call the guy who graduated at the dead bottom of his class in medical school?

A: Doctor.

In my experience, there are a LOT of shitty doctors out there and many who can’t dictate their way out of a paper bag. It’s scary. Don’t recall a single one of them advocating for quackery and goofy internet misinformation, though.

If he ever had a license, they definitely need to pull it.

He thinks it's possible in 15 minutes to diagnose diabetes or cancer or atherosclerosis or most of the other ailments that can actually kill you? You're walking upright and not bleeding from any orifices so you're OK, out you go! Hope you enjoyed the festival, peasant!

The biggest problem with ACA is that it mainlines taxpayer dollars to insurance companies.

The biggest problem for many of us little guys is that they are now taking the "affordability" part of the ACA away.

Dems need to run on universal healthcare.

If even HALF of all health insurance payments were instead paid as taxes, we could have universal health care for every single American, and never again have some billionaire insurance executive decide your family member should be declined a life-saving procedure.

Insurance companies have no fucking business in our health care "industry".
