(79,809 posts)Gun violence is the largest cause of child deaths in the US.
Children exposed to gun violence safety training in school.
Subjected to mass shootings.
Subjected to violence in the home and streets.
Kids cannot afford to go to school, food, healthcare.

And all American children.
We didn't leave them a better world.

I will do what little I can to try and turn this trajectory.
I have but one sanity to give for my country.

(4,543 posts)Remember the tv shows? Laura and Rob Petri didn't even share a bed.
We lived in the comfort of a post war society and reaped the security of the New Deal systems put in place by FDR.
And then our lives were defined by the changes in the late 60's and the horrors of the Vietnam War. There was a ray of hope with the idea of a "Great Society".
And then came Nixon with the normalization of lies, and the cynicism of corruption.
And ever since Ronnie Raygun and the 80's we have watched a deterioration of the New Deal infrastructure and any hope of a Great Society. And yet our lives still went on. But behind the scenes there was an agenda for evil. (Heritage Foundation; Federalist Society and Leonard Leo; Koch Brothers)
And then came the final assault with the Trumpocalypse, aided and abetted by the Tech Bros, Russell Vought and Project 2025...and let's not forget Elon Musk. And let's not forget an assist from a captured RepugliCON Congress.
How do we reclaim anything from this? I ask this question every day. I feel like I want to write an letter of apology to those generations that will follow us.

(79,809 posts)The US prospered and valued their democracy.
We made huge strides in the 60's and 70's.
But then pure evil came to visit in the form of Reagan, Bush, etc.
I don't know where it will all end.
I keep saying that the human condition is an iconic one of good vs evil.
Young people are not immune from the battle.
They will have to fight it like our parents did.

(18,074 posts)Even though guns can slaughter children in greater numbers all at once, and yet the gop doesnt care about children when it comes to gun violence. They love guns more than the children they pretend to care about. They just use children as their continued props.

(18,074 posts)It must be stopped now. Also passing legislation banning litter boxes in schools. Gotta protect those kids from themselves.
And we must defend the childrens right to possess guns as young as possible. Teach them early on how guns are more valuable than an education.

(18,074 posts)And there isnt anyone willing to deal with the issue. You would think Uvalde would have been the last straw, however, guns are always a protected right over a childs.
Apparently there was an accidental shooting after a high school football championship victory party. A friend shot his friend in the neck. Now this young man will never play football, never graduate from his high school, all because he chose to weld a weapon.
Guns are a big issue nationally and with deadly consequences.

(24,856 posts)There is a poll with 4 choices.
___ It has a long-lasting severe impact
___ It affects survivors but can be managed
___ The trauma is sometimes exaggerated
___ Im unsure about the long-term effects
The ripple effect on these mass shootings spreads far and wide. I don't know how kids live with what they saw or heard or the terror of being that close to a mass slaughter. I especially think of Sandy Hook and Uvalde.... what those little kids saw! The press won't even publish photos because they are too graphic (the Washington Post did publish some photographs which can be found on the internet) but kids saw and heard it all... floors covered in blood, dead classmates... how do you live with that trauma? What does that do to you? They'll have to live with it for the rest of their lives. But they're all just collateral damage. We can't hurt the gun industry after all. (sarcasm) The second amendment is more sacred than second graders.
